Which was the better Super Bowl: 42 (Giants vs. Patriots) or 43 (Cardinals vs Steelers)?

They were both great and arguably 2 of the best ever, and of course I am biased, but I would take Super Bowl 42. Very few people picked the underdog Giants to even come close to beating the almighty 18-0 Brady and the Pats who were going for another record that had never been done before. And then there was the miraculous Great Escape pass by Eli Manning and the Helmet catch by David Tyree.

I was rooting for the Cardinals all the way in Super Bowl 43 and was disappointed that the Cardinals didn't upset the Steelers. Both games were extremely exciting with the underdog Giants going ahead on a drive with seconds left, and the favored Steelers doing the same.

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

    Steelers win was better.

  • That's not what I asked...which SB was better, not which team winning was. image

Ending of this year's took off a little of the lustre. One Hail Mary for the game winner to the end zone would have put it over the top.

  • I always root for the underdog unless it's my team. I really like Kurt Warner too, so the underdog Cardinals not winning really hurt.

It's not even close, as disappointing as it was for me, 42 was MUCH better, given the undefeated season that was on the line. Not to mention the Giants shutting down the most explosive offense in league history. 43 had eight great minutes in the 4th, and with the exception of the Harrison play was a pretty boring game.

    I don't think 43 was any better or worse than Giants/Bills, Rams/Patriots, Broncos/Packers, or Rams/Titans.

Yeah, those were all great also. I remember during the 1991 Super Bowl it seemed like an hour holding my breath until Norwood made his failed field goal attempt. And who could forget Super Bowl 23 in 1989 when Joe Montanna, whose 49ers were losing by 3 points, drove the ball down the field throwing the winning touchdown with 34 seconds left.

Two back to back very entertaining and exciting Super Bowls. I'd rate them equal in those terms.

EDIT: Oh I just saw it's a poll so I voted for the recent one, Since the OP is forcing us to choose, then I gotta go with the recent one as the "better" game, although a team beating an undefeated team in itself makes for a heckuva Super Bowl.
  • I think some of the people who voted for the Super 43, the most recent one, is because it still sticks in their minds as fresh and was a very exciting game. But the element of an underdog team who most sports gurus said had no chance to beat the 18-0 Patriots trumps them all.

    Going into the game,
the appeal of having an undefeated team playing was interesting,
but 42 was basically a boring defenive struggle decided by a blind luck catch by Tyree.

Super Bowl 43 was exciting from beginning to end,
with Harrison's fantastic rumble to close out the first half
and then Arizona's historic comeback from the jaws of defeat only to lose at the very end.

So, Super Bowl 43 without question and not because it's still fresh in my mind.

Warner and Roethlisberger both had better scrambles than Elis. Only a Giants fan could think otherwise ... image

Giants fans would have stated their win was the better game no matter what the game was like because their team won.

...and when my Eagles finally win a Super Bowl, I'll state it was the best Super Bowl ever.....even if the Eagles only win by a score of 2 - 0. LOL

I voted for 42 but in my opinion, it wasn't the best SB. I was fortunate to attend SB XXXII and to date, the best football game I've ever personally witnessed.

At the beginning of the game, 90% of the fans were cheering for GB. As the game progressed, more and more started to cheer on DEN. By the time Elway did his impersonation of a helicopter, everyone cheered for him to get his first championship.

    Good times.

I attended both. Super Bowl XLII was a huge upset, however, Super Bowl XLIII was much more exciting.
  • I don't really know how anyone could call 43 great, or one of the best ever (not picking on you Seated Coin, the sports media started this crap).
The first half was one of the sloppiest I've ever seen played. The Cards looked worse than the 07-08 Dolphins, with one drive where
they had more penalties than plays, then another defensive sequence when they had 3 personal foul penalties, plus another couple stupid
penalties that ended up leading to a Pittsburgh TD. To me, this is where Arizona blew it. Immature, ameturish play on that drive. Yeah, the score was
back and forth, which made it exciting, but the first half of this game was just awful, and I really don't think that Arizona should have even been there.
If anyone wants to call the 2nd half one of the greatest in SB history, I'll buy that.

I wasnt a fan of any of the 4 teams in the last two super bowls, and in my opinion, based on purely the game played, not any undefeated season, or first super bowl hype, the more recent game was much better than the 2008 superbowl.

  • That Giants Victory over the Juggernaught Patriots will always be remembered long after SB 43 fades into meaningless with No signifigaint history like the giants win thus preserving the 72 Dolphin Legacy. SB 43 was fun, but not even a top 10 contender in SB history.

SB X sucked. Dallas was never in it and only made the score close late in the game. At least half of the SBs were better than that one.

42 was a snoozer well into the 2nd half but had that one memorable great play.

43 was snoozer for the 1st quarter but Arizona picked things up and looked to go ahead when Harrison made one of the coolest plays in SB history to end the 1st half. 2nd half started slow but by the end of the 3rd quarter it started to pick up and turn into one of the best 2nd halfs in SB history. So I think it's pretty easy to say SB 43 had more great moments and edge of the seat play.

  • Dallas led Super Bowl X by a score of 10-7 going into the 4th quarter, and eventually lost 21-17. Not sure what game the earlier poster was referring to when he said "Dallas was never in it."

Normally defensive games are boring but how can Tom Brady getting sacked 5 times be boring? image OK, OK....I know I am a damned biased Giants fan. image

By the way, very close poll results.
