Winners and losers in A-Rod fiasco

Winners:

Michael Phelps (gets him out of the headlines quickly)
Joe Torre (enjoyment for him I'm sure)
Red Sox fans (misery for a hated rival is great entertainment)

Losers:

A-Rod (of course)
Yankees (many aspects including a big controversy overshadowing the opening of a new stadium)
Baseball in general (they really didn't need this at all)

  • I wonder what the breakdown of batters vs pitchers are in the 104?

My point is that if it turns out that 40% of batters are using steroids and the same amount of pitchers are using steroids then it's all a wash - I mean yeah Aaron never used steroids but then again he never faced a juiced up Bob Gibson or Tom Seaver (i think - i just heard that the 1962 San Diego Chargers were fed steroids in an "experiment" the year they won the NFL Championship)

    any arguments....

Winners: Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens

All the negative press on Bonds and Clemens will continue, but A-rod will now
be the torch bearer of the steroid era. A-rod can really help himself by
coming out clean and admit to the failed test. We are a forgiving nation.

A-rod's chase for 600, 700, and 800 will be ugly as this will forever follow him.

There are NO winners, the game is dirty and has been for apparently a long, long time. Don Fehr is paid big bucks to be the Union Rep, who's job is to protect the players come hell or high water, damn the integrity of the game. Bud Selig is just out in the ozone somewhere playing ostrich.

There are LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of losers, they are the fans. We who are silly enough to put up with this insanity and continue to rah, rah the home team, when in fact a fair percentage have more then likely used something to cheat. Until we begin to protest by not going to the games I suspect cheating will continue. Fehr will continue to be the players idiot front man and Selig will continue to wring his hands expressing concerns about the fairness of the game, blah, blah and doing NADA.

I wouldn't be A-Rod crossing the white lines at Fenway this season for anything, and I doubt his reception in the new King George Stadium will be much better.

No doubt the position of all involved will be "the records are sealed by the court, therefore we cannot comment on the advice of legal counsel as to the veracity of the allegation". Translation...we are scared to death to tell the truth.

    Don't we deserve better?

Very well said, alpemomo. It's all a wash!!
  • It could be a win for the Yankees if we use this to get rid of him now. Wishful thinking image
  • "My point is, if it's found out that every batter of this era used steroids but for Mark Gruzielanek, I'll forever consider him the greatest player of this generation."

That's really your point? Then why even bother posting?!

You also said "I don't understand how that's a wash at all." Hmmmm, after reading "your point", I'm not a bit surprised that you don't understand how that's a wash.

  • Only the media will think that a 6 yr old failed drug test when A-rod played for a different team could in any way overshadow the opening of the new stadium. 80% of real Yankee fans don't give a flying flock about A-rod anyway.

    No doubt.

I'm not so sure that baseball in general is a loser. Baseball may be a winner. But, at worst, baseball just remained the status quo. Will the AROD revelations have an measurable effect on the game of baseball? Will overall attendance decrease? Unlikely. When the Yankees play the Red Sox, will the stadium be anything other than 100% filled to capacity? I seriously doubt it. The issue of steroids/HGH/PEDs has been around for years, but the game remains as popular as ever, if not more popular. Fans are still attending the game and spending millions, if not billions. Back on January 25, 2009, Goot started a thread announcing that he is looking forward to Spring Training. Are you [still] looking forward to Spring Training? I am. In many ways, the steroids/HGH/PEDs issue is simply a non-issue. Now, find some umpires "on the take" or players/managers with gambling issues, that would be completely different.

Winners and losers will be more fully known when the rest of the list is leaked out. I can't wait for that!

Also, let's not forget Bonds used steroids AND lied about it under oath. A-rod coming clean now makes Bonds more of a loser than he already was in my opinion.

Uh, A-Rod's admission = trouble for Bonds and Clemens. Ain't no one going to believe them now.

Yes the rest of the 104 list will be very interesting. These guys might as well start damage control early as they will all be outed sooner or later.

Does anyone think that A-Rod may actually "retire" early in his career to keep from having to face the pressure and fan hate of him breaking some hallowed records?

  • Arod wasnt even popular in NY....

all i care about is WHO IS THE NEXT TORCH BEARER?
  • Ok, now Cardinals fans, don't get your shorts bunched up when I ask this.
    but......................

Will it eventually come out that superstar Albert Pujols used or uses ROIDS?

Again, just asking the question.......If I find out he does, I am through watching Professional Baseball
as it will sicken me forever!

Actually, how about Griffey, Jr.? Or Derek Jeter?

I hope the biggest loser is the myth that somehow these clowns deserve to be idolized and we do away with this ridiculous question of who was the best ever. Parents need to sit there kids down and remind them what is important about competition. Many of these guys in all sports are so ego driven that it destroys any character that they might of developed. Arod is just another athlete breaking the rules and screwing around on his wife. What he will lose is the respect of true fans regardless of what happens in his future.

I'll never forget back in the early 80's staying at a downtown Chicago Hotel and and receiving 4 late night phone calls from chicks wanting to come up to my room. It didn't dawn on me until the next day that a certain NBA team was staying at the same hotel and that one of their star players had the same name and as it turned out this guy was married with children.

No one wins, the losers will be those who keep idolizing these clowns. Go read the Plaxico story in S.I. to get another insight into how these guys think, its sickening to say the least.
