Pats put Franchise tag on Cassel

Im not 100% sure what the deal is with the tag being put on him but I believe the door is open for them to deal him but with a higher price tag now- anyone know the full details?

  • It means the Chiefs will have to give up a first round pick I think.

I think its 2 picks. I am assuming that if Brady is close to healthy they trade him rather than have 25% of their money tied up in 2 players.

    I agree with Morgoth ... it's TWO 1st rounders.

I don't believe anybody will give them 2 first rounders, but what it does for the Pats is UP his trade value. They can ask for a bit more in a trade, because if he does not get traded and gets signed as a free agent, the new team will lose TWO first rounders.

Typical good move and I would be shocked if he stays on the team. They built his value sky high and now is the time to cash in.

There is ZERO chance Cassel remains with the team next year, even if Brady isn't healthy to start the season. Cassel doesn't figure into their long-term plans and his value will never be higher than it is right now. Hence, slapping the tag on him immediately.

Nobody will sign him as a free agent and give up 2 first rounders...a trade involving a 1st rounder and a player/lower draft pick (3rd or 4th) is much more likely.

Minnesota would be crazy not to make a run at him... they are a QB away from being a serious Super Bowl contender.

I thought he was kind of aproduct of the system... I mean dude didn't start in college, is he worth a nfl 1st rounder plus?

I think they really are worried about Brady never being what he was again. If the Pats GM, I might be tempted to shop Brady and Cassel around. And despite being a really good football team, they could use some help, especially on defense.

Although obviously not the exact same comparison, the Chargers made a mistake in not trading Tomlinson and signing Turner to a long-term deal two years ago.
  • For teams that need a QB, a high pick QB out of college is like rolling the dice, many busts. And a high price tag.
Cassel has played a full season, something like 3700 yds, 21 td, 12 picks. Decent numbers, much better than
schwab sp? had with Atlanta before Houston signed him. I would trade a mid to late 1st, maybe a second or a
    CB.

this just in: The New England Patriots will NOT be "shopping" Tom Brady.

Gillette Stadium would be burned to the ground and Mr. Kraft would no longer be the owner...his surviving heirs (if any) would inherit ownership rights.

    Your 100% correct!

Seriously Im not sure why there is all this talk about Brady not returning and or not ever being the same. the guy had a knee injury for god sakes!

Its not like his throwing shoulder was damaged beyond repair, Cassel will be shopped around for the highest price and the Pats will cash in. Hopefully we can resolve our CB and safety spots where we need the most help. Vegas has the Pats as favorites already for next years Super Bowl- believe me if they thought Brady was not coming back healthy they would offer much higher odds to reel in more action.
