Should I waste my $$........

So the local store I go to is having a Pack Wars promotion Saturday night after normal closing time.

UD donated a nice signed Griffey Jr auto's piece as the prize. It's a blowup of his UD rookie
card and it framed size is probably 16X20 and it is signed in silver. It a very nice looking piece.

I'm not sure of the exact details of the pack war but I suggested to the owner to give a ticket
to the winner of each round. 1 round for each pack in the box. Then pick one of the winning tickets
to give the Griffey to.

The cost is $80 or $85 and that gets you a 2009 UD BB box, pizza and soda.

So now I need help from the wise members of this board.

Should I attend the event?

Before you make a snap answer pplease know that Zep will be there so the odds of
me winning anything better than a Felix Fermin base card are very small.

I can see it now it will work 1 of 2 ways.

Way 1:
Zep wins every pack war that has a card with a sell value of .25 or more. He by default wins
the Griffey because nobody else wins a pack war.

Way 2:
Zep only wins 1 or 2 rounds but of course in his pack winnigs will be
the Octo 1/1 Obama, MLK, JFK, Jackie Robinson, Bill Clinton, Joe Jackson, Atilla The Hun & Harvey Milk Auto and a 1/1 Babe Ruth Cut auto
and one of his 2 round wins will win the Griffey auto piece.

What should I do??

Either way I will be there to video it!

I've never participated in a Pack War, but I've always wanted to...I say go for it.

2 or more people open a pack or a box and try to find either the most expensive card or the card the closest to some predetermined number. Usually, the winner gets all the cards...in this case the winner gets a Griffey UDA prize.

I remember doing that with a buddy at a show in Houston back in 1989. Upper Deck High numbers had just come out and was by far the hottest product at the show.

We split the cost of a box and decided whoever pulled an Ozzie Canseco would be the winner. Neither of us pulled one.

My buddy pulled a Nolan Ryan hi number, which was just as hot as Griffey, Walton, Abbott or anything else. He graciously let me buy his half of the box.

    For $80 - $85 , I would do it if:

    1) The box being used for war has potential to yield some good cards.

    2) The winner of each round (pack) gets to keep everyone else's cards.
(Some pack wars vary letting everyone keep their cards depending on rules before you open.)

    3) I've seen a UDA 16X20 Griffey signed and matted for $400 in a store at Universal Studios
named Field of Dreams, or Collector's Field or something. They're gone now.

Good luck and have fun if you decide to do it.

I say go for it. It sounds like a fun event. People who collect cards are viewed by most people as dorks - talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Even if you lose, at least you get some pizza and pop out of it.

  • Looking for low #'d 2006 Marques Hagans + 1991 Wild Card stripes of UVA players - Tony Covington, Shawn Moore, Herman Moore

  • Pack wars used to be a regular happening at our 2 local card shops back in the day. Won 2 of the best cards in my collection. Back when 97 Upper Deck legends came out we broke 1 box. The last round of the box my wife pulled a Tony Dorsett auto and won a Lou Groza auto and a Rocky Bleir auto redemption. Later at our other card store- didn't win anything but was in the drawing for door prizes and won a Kobe chrome rookie which came back later as a PSA 9.

Not much of a player these days when it comes to packs as most of disposable income goes to Raider auto mini-helmets and Goal Line art cards.
