Help determining if this card legit

Hi. I've to this point only read the message board but never participated. I've been incredibly impressed with the knowledge shown by the members of this board. Which brings me to this post. Can you give me opinions on this auction? It looks in great shape. Is it trimmed? If it is NM-MT, why hasn't it been sent in for grading?
Thanks for any help.

this Gretzky he sold look legit? KSA graded Gretzky rookie
  • Then there's the fact he graded a low grade Gretzky but not this one

It's probably OK-- he's in Canada, and there are still quite a few nice, raw cards up there. But as a rule you should never assume that a card will grade any higher than an 8 based on a scan, so I would think that the most realistic best-case scenario here is that this is a $120 card after it gets graded. It could grade a 9, I guess, in which case it's $350-$400, but it could also grade a 7.... again, you just don't have enough information based on a scan.

If it were me I'd play it safe and buy a PSA 8.

    Welcome,

Here's a few back threads about KSA Grading.

While the card doesn't appear to be trimmed IMO, I would contact the seller and ask why he hasn't sent it to PSA or SGC?

Ask him the same questions you're asking here.

I know many Canadians find it easier to send their cards to KSA because of location, but most that I've dealt with prefer PSA or SGC.

When the seller replies, post it here.

I'm sure you'll get some very interesting views of direction.

    If it's real it's spectacular........
  • Thanks for the info.
Dryden in PSA 8 have been selling for 600.00+ recently and I really would like to get a nice one.
My experience with KSA grading is that they are not quite to the level of PSA or SGC. I deal a lot with SGC and generally a KSA card I cracked and submitted to SGC returned at least 1 grade lower. I will email my question and post reply here.

There is a reason why that card is being sold raw.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Received answer from seller regarding why he did not send in card to be graded:
    Hi there,
I have 10 Dryden rookie cards....most of them are high grades. I have no need to send this one in. Thanks for the interest.

BEWARE!!! Just my opinion, but there are some characteristics that I don't like. Aside from the nearly razor sharp edges (71-2 OPC had some well cut cards for OPC), I really don't like the ding on the back upper left corner. Appears too clean to the edge and suggests it was whacked. Accordingly, the front wear on the front upper left also is too square to the edge and appears to be the byproduct of trimming...

Hi there, I have 10 Dryden rookie cards....most of them are high grades. I have no need to send this one in. Thanks for the interest.

Is that like saying "I have too much money and no need for more"?

    "Molon Labe"

  • It may be just me but the back left corners , especially the bottom one , look to be a bit whiter than the rest of the border. Also when looked at from the front there appears to be some slight hooking on the corners. It doesn't matter if the guy has 10 or a hundred of these if this was untampered with he would have sent it in somewhere. Why throw cash away? That's a real lame excuse on his part.

His email to you states: "I have 10 Dryden rookie cards....most of them are high grades. I have no need to send this one in."

Yet his auction description states: "I've been in the card scene for about 25 years and have never seen a Dryden this nice."
