Ken Griffey Jr in 2009...Retirement???

I am a big Junior fan and I like to see him play one more season. Then again, perhaps it is time to call it
quits. I know he was hurt last season and his numbers reflected that.

It seems like there are quite a few guys that were once big names that don't have jobs yet. I wonder if guys like Griffey and Pudge (and Manny at this point) will end up going the Clemens route and start their seasons in late May or June when teams start to pile up injuries.

I am not a Griffey hater in the least bit but imo, he should have retired a few years ago. He is hurt way too much.

I can understand wanting to hang in there and not give up but I think he should move on.
  • The Twins could use him. I think he should play as long as he can, he is a great guy to watch. Plus he still has that swing...

Threads like this always serve to remind me why sports is not real life. Why? Because I would imagine that 99.9% of us look forward to the day where we can retire/don't have to work anymore. Professional athletes? For most/many, they would elect to put off retirement forever.

I saw Junior and Senior hit back-to-back HRs in Anaheim. I'll never forget that game, or the buzz of the crowd when they realized what had just happened. AMAZING!

Sadly though, I also think it's time for Junior to pack it in.

If he could actually play in 150+ games, I would love to see him back as well, but I don't think that is probable.

Well, he did play in 144 games in 2007 and 143 games in 2008, so maybe all is not lost.

P.S. Wow! I just checked. In his 20 year career, Griffey has missed 719 games. (Granted, playing 162 games a season for 20 straight seasons is unrealistic.) Oh wait, the strike year of 1994. Ah, whatever!

  • Love Jr. - probably the best player of my generation. Over 600 clean home runs?!?!? Are you kidding me? Only Aaron, Ruth & Mays have done that, and the thing is Griffey was soooo much more than a power hitter. His defense in center was fantastic, I still recall some of those amazing catches he made for Seattle.

I think going back to Seattle for a victory lap makes a lot of sense - for him & the team. Sheesh the amount of Jr jerseys the team would sell would alone make up for his contract! Not only that, but a player of his caliber would rub off on some of the younger players there. And with any luck at all he'll have a somewhat healthy year and be able to contribute with the bat, maybe he sticks around a few years splitting time between DH & RF.

In the age of roids Griff has been a welcome guy to baseball. He was thrid in homers the year Mac and Sosa went ape ****, we all know they were
both juiced up, Griffey could stay with them even without it.

Also a stand up guy off the field. Id take him on my team.

No, the word is he's getting himself in shape and his shoulder has recovered from injury. Several teams are interested, he'll play in 09.
