Do dealers buy display cases at shows?

I'm talking about those cases that dealers use to display coins here. A friend and I are going to set up at a local show and given that I am not a dealer, I have no cases to use. However, someone just offered to sell me a case, which I'd consider buying but only if I could easily resell it by the show's end.

So back to my original question, do dealers buy empty cases at shows?

Most dealers in local small venues bring their personally owned cases. Most if not all of the regional and national shows provide rental cases. Why not ask the party that offered you the case if they would rent it to you short term? Your chances of selling the purchased case after one use at a local show are pretty slim if you expect retail for it. Allstate cases retail new for about $125.

Used display cases can be had for about $40 or so each. If you buy one it may be a good idea to just hold on to it in the event that you set up again at another coin show in the future.

Unfortunately, I contacted the host of this show and he stated that they do not provide rental cases. I was offered a lightly used case for $50, which I only plan to use for the duration of the show. Would I have any trouble getting a price near that after the show?

Display cases are bulky and that is the reason why some dealers rent them if they could instead of carrying around their own. Unless another dealer really needs a case they aren't that salable. Why not just hold on to the case and use it next time?

I intend to do this as a one-time thing and have no other plans for setting up at a show in the foreseeable future. Plus, cases are big and having one would probably occupy too much space in my house.

I can't imagine putting on a coin show and not offering rental of display cases.

I bought 2 new cases from allstate at full retail, then bought 2 used cases on the bay for $100 delivered, a pleasant suprise was they had 4 inserts in each case, another $80 or so that I did not expect.

  • A nice used case is well worth $ 40-$ 50 . Yes, they are big and heavy, but you may
want to use it again in the future. I would just keep it . However, if you just have to sell
it, I don't think you would have any problem selling it at the show .
If someone offered one to me for $ 50, I'd jump on it , and I don't even need it.
I'd just throw it in the closet (I've got one in there already, and another one has been in the trunk of my car
    for over a year) .

So you buy the used one for $50.00 and at the end of the show you sell it for $25.00 and it cost you $25.00 to rent it for the show. I certainly don't think you'll have a problem selling it at that price.

All this nattering about "Will it sell?" is crap. Anything will sell if the price is right.

These things go for $40 - $50 used in good condition. Offering one at half that will almost certainly sell quickly.

    Cheers,

    Bob
