Anyone ever dealt with DEAN'S CARDS???

I just bought some raw Red Man's from Deans' Cards I was planning on submitting for some sets I am trying to complete, and I must say, I am VERY disappointed in the condition of the cards for the technical condition they were described as....has anyone else ever had bad dealings with them??

A few times. Most of the '60's cards I've bought from them were as described, but I did find their prices to be a bit too high.

They do have a no questions asked return policy.

Bought a number of vintage singles one time and all were overgraded. Have not been back again.

I have dealt with Dean's Cards and have had good experiences. I would return the cards if unhappy. They should honor the return policy

Long dormant thread, but now relevant as I need a 71 Topps Tony Taylor. This one received a Dean's rating of 8 NM-MT. I kinda like the initiative in Dean creating his own rating system. Has anyone had experience with such graded cards since February 2009?

Also, can someone tell me how to create a link so I do not have to post a URL?

I bought a large lot of 69's and 75 min is sometime ago, They were spot on. The 69 Mantle was actually a beautiful card and would grade to an 8, I believe. I know they rebuilt their site a while back, so you have to use their newest link.

Let me first say that this is not my website. He just listed some graded cards on eBay so grossly overpriced that I so badly wanted to ask him if it was a joke. I have also observed that most of his raw cards appear to be overgraded. Jmo, tigerdean

Even if that Tony Taylor were to be graded an "8" by PSA (which is debatable), he is asking 250% of the VCP of a "PSA 8".

    Very high prices.

I'm surprised they sell any cards.

When I sent an email to ask, they responded "Market Value".

It wasn't even vintage, I think it was a Heritage SP from 2009 for like $22.00.

    Market value ?

Thank goodness you can find reasonable prices in the real marketplace.

That must be one of the cards he has on clearance this week, then.

it is market value. just depends on which market you shop at. i see markets around here, too with Range Rovers and Porsches in the parking lot, but they sell pretty much the same food as the market with the parking lot full of Volvos.

By my count, exactly 20 of the last 2000 items in his completed listings have sold (or 1%), and that includes a very recent flurry of sales. Accurately graded or not, it's clear that the business model is "a sucker is born every 50 listings".
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭
Out of over 41,423 listings, he has sold 133 items. So he sells one in ever 311 items. I look at some of the things that sold and the prices they sold for and keep asking myself "who are these people buying these cards?" It doesnt even make sense with other cards for sale on ebay.

One good example is an overgraded 1953 Topps Berra that he sold for 202.00. It was listed in "VG-EX 4" condition.

There are four psa 4 examples on ebay right now ranging from 101.00 to 155.00(with best offer option).

If people are that dumb, I have no one below an IQ of 140 looking at my auctions.

I bought a few cards from dean years ago when I got back into collecting. They were overpriced and overgraded. Then I realized there are other places to buy better cards for cheaper prices. Never again will I buy from him.
  • His prices are outrageous and there's not much I can add here that everyone else hasn't written already. Only thing I can think of are that the people who purchase from "Deans Overpriced Cards" are people who trust him as a seller on ebay. Its a familiar name and people might have comfort in that and with that alone is good enough for some to purchase their stuff, the same way that buyers purchase from Probstein and PWWC when there are clearly other examples of the same cards that look just as nice or nicer that end up selling for a lot less.

The difference is that Dean's doesn't auction their cards, they are straight retail. An attractive logo can go a long way.

Bought something advertised as a PSA 8 that was actually as PSA 8(ST).

Based on his pricing I would classify his target audience into these groups:

    - the uninformed consumer

    - morons

    - the 1%'ers

    - all of the above combined

Often I don't know current vcp or what a card goes for.

I have looked up vcp for many of dean's cards and find him way overpriced.

Now when I see a card I like and it is dean's....time to move on w/out even looking up price.

I agree with the others that they overgrade and are overpriced. That said, they are one of the few dealers that have a decent web based interface of vintage cards, and have for a long time. I was putting together a vintage set around the turn of the century, and Dean's was really the only dealer where you could easily find vintage commons.

Exhibit 'A' in my argument that one's FVFs should be determined according to the dollar percentage of merchandise that they move every month. You sell off a high percentage of the value of your store every month, you pay very little; you clog up everyone's searches with moon prices, you pay for that privilege.
  • The thing I like best about Deans Cards is the never ending stream of spam emails they send me for buying a $15 dollar item.

Loves me the spam emails. image

The turn of the century was 13 years ago, when the Internet was still in diapers, so that is not exactly a ringing endorsement.

When I was searching that's what attracted me to the website as well. It felt like one stop shopping, he had all the cards I was looking for.

But once I started adding items to the shopping cart, the total shot up so fast, it felt like I was purchasing the entire set instead of filling some holes in a few sets.

I couldn't justify spending that much money on a few commons. (non-vintage).

I thought it was too bad that he was trying to completely screw the collector and would monitor the site to see if the prices came down, but they were actually going up.

It was almost like the collector who really doesn't want to sell his stuff, so he throws out an outrageous figure knowing no one will bite.

.....I couldn't conceive of a market where the demand for 2006 Heritage Jay Payton was increasing...

I just said, "Good Luck" unloading those cards and deleted the website from my favorites.

    Got it. Thanks fellas.

BTW - Anyone got a Tony Taylor 1971 they can part with? Feel free to apply your own grade. I think "4 forks" or "3 snaps" will be in line with what I am seeking for my set.
  • I wonder what dean's cards pays for cards when he buys them?
