For all of you who thought Ben scored a TD

IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
I looked at my wife and said 62 can't pull him over the goal line. So I googled the rules: from the NFL Digest of Rules:Use of Hands, Arms, and Body

1. No player on offense may assist a runner except by blocking for him. There shall be no interlocking interference. NFL Rule

So did they change the rule or do they just ignore it? BTW I thought replay got it right and I was rooting for Pixburg.

  • If USC can do it, so can Pittsburgh.

His knee was obviously down so I dont think that player pulling him in was ever considered- had his knee NOT been down I bet that would have been challenged as well.

Big Ben played a phenominal game, congrats to him & Pitt fans.
  • Originally I thought they threw the flag because he was illegally helped across the line.

I saw that flagged in '85 when the Fridge picked up Walter Payton and tried to carry him accross the goal line vs. the Cowboys.

That is when I first heard of the rule, and then of course the famous Reggie Bush push of Leanheart, which didn't get called.

That would have made sense if they hadn't originally called it a touchdown on the field.

This from Peter King: b. Excellent call by Terry McAulay in upholding the Arizona challenge. Not only was Roethlisberger a half-yard short of the goal line when his knee hit the ground, but Big Ben was being illegally carried into the end zone by center Justin Hartwig.

Helping someone across the goal line happens DOZENS of times per season - it is NEVER called. Usually it happens when there are 1 or 2 lineman trying to push the runner through 4 or 5 defenders, so it is a little harder to notice, but it happens. I'm pretty sure you can't challenge whether a player was helped across the goal line...just like you can't review PI or holding calls.

You will never convince me that his knee was down on that play, just like you will never convince me that Ben actually did cross the goal line vs. Seattle in Super Bowl XL.

Agreed there is no way you can tell from those replays his knee was down.

I've known Terry McAulay for 24 years. I worked with him 24 years ago and then he worked for me about 10 years ago (in jobs that have nothing to do with football). Believe me, Terry is an excellent referee. That's the second time he's worked the Super Bowl -- and you have to earn that privilege. The refs get graded by the NFL -- and only the best ones get to work during the playoffs.
