It is not fair to the show organizers or to the people who plan on attending the show to have their event judged as "bleak" several days before it begins. For anybody who has experience in organizing similar events will probably agree with this.
The Long Beach expo has had its issues as of late, but I have confidence that this coming show has a strong shot of turning into an overall success for most people there.

I am one of the most upbeat positive people in the market today....
however we have a feel for what is happening based on many factors....as I posted... I said I hope I am wrong and the show is great, but judging from the info that I have.... things are not looking good....
guess time will tell and JA, I truly hope I am proven wrong.... and yes members should attend... in fact probably a great time to buy since there are some really good bargains seen in the higher priced coins.....
but I have to speak my mind even if it occassional is not politically correct.... if I dont make fair and accurate comments then there is really no point in posting ... Im not here as a poster child to ra ra the market!
I've been told for years that Long Beach is primarily dealer-to-dealer, so you should be able to judge it before it opens to collectors. That said, I am personally checking my asset allocations quarterly and watching Congress screw up the market and I would rather keep spending on coins than stocks that bad policy may drive into the ground.
Early reports coming in.... stuff at pre auction not selling at great numbers today.... now gold down $20.... hate to be negative but looks like it will be a really bleak show!
I do not understand this opening salvo. You are either making a false statement or are looking for and trying to influence sympathizers.
GOLD IS NOT DOWN. Furthermore the weather in L.A. -RIGHT NOW ---would make 99% of the world envious. Everybody is enjoying it. 80f yesterday is good enough for me. Long Beach at the ocean at 70-75f........bring sunscreen.
Try to find a nice coin at a shop right now and ..I'll tell you..it ain't easy. A local dealer that I love, just sold an 1804 pcgs xf45 Large cent, 1914 proof buff in 66, 1797 $1. Good coins are flying out of shops that I do business with.
I think the show will be above average. At a minimum.
I hope to read another excellent show report from you. Please do write one.
I am hoping to make it there, but I am swamped at the office and have meetings scheduled which conflict. I hope that the show does go well, but with the current economic realities in CA (no state budget, unemployment a full point higher than the National average) I wouldn't be surprised to read that widget sales were down. Bullion should stay strong, as PM prices seem to be staying pretty firm.
The truth is so painful that it gets BOLDENED as it gets quoted.
I LOVE it! And it's true. All I could hear was "The market sucks; there is no one building Saint sets; the coins have run up too much, blah, blah, blah from the voices in Ca. to Lincroft, New Jersey!
I bought my 1920-S MS64 for 120K hammer and I was a "book bid" and I was cheap, I assure you....and it's the best of the 64's...and I have a $180K bid right now for the coin but that's 50-100% less than I'll sell it for in 5 years when I may consider selling it to send the girl to Princeton (although her academic scholarship will really allow me to take the dough and spend it on really cool stuff. !)
Looking at the coins I put on watch at Heritage many of those coins are currently bid less than 50% previous sales with 10hrs to go until internet bidding ends

$20 down move in gold? Gold has been very consistent this past week. In fact I would be surprised if it doesn't trend up higher as the LB show progresses. I would have to agree that judging a show that starts tomorrow by a single pre-show auction doesn't seem to be fair.
I plan on attending the LB show tomorrow.....This will be my first show since I sold my collection at FUN 2007. I will be primarily looking but you never know what might be offered.....
Went to the show today and I have to say, I was even more disappointed than usual. To me, traffic was lower than normal on an opening day, not bad, but probably 2/3 of what it usually is on opening day (haven't missed a LB show in 10 years). Virtually saw nothing I was interested in, which is becoming normal (ouch). In summary, other than lower than normal traffic, was pretty much normal. Wish it had been better - I usyally find something to take home!

Excellent. I'll speak my mind too:
It would to seem to me that you might have a better perspective on the market here if:
1) You were here
2) You attended any of the pre-auctions
3) You waited until the show actually took place before ranking it

<< <i>It's ridiculous to judge a show on Monday!! I heard that the Nafziger coins went VERY strong.
Gold down $20? What about GOLD IS UP $100 from a month ago?? We're at $900+....that's bad? Oh...how about GOLD IS UP $200 since Oct.?!!? That sucks!
SOS....good stuff sells well...garbage and mediocre stuff will be soft if the market is soft.
If things are so bad then BUY EVERYTHING YOU CAN THAT LOOKS GOOD!!
Hell, I've bought most of my BEST stuff in sloppy markets, many I was a "cheap" bid in the book!
Thank you, Jay... for 'splainin'
