For about the time it takes you to read this sentence, millions of eyes from all over the world on Sunday will focus on a product made in Melbourne -- the coin used in the opening flip for Super Bowl XLIII.
Like it has for the previous 18 years, The Highland Mint at Eau Gallie Boulevard and Riverside Drive produced the coin for the opening coin toss in the Super Bowl. This year's game is between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Super Bowl winners John Elway, Lynn Swann and Roger Craig will take part in the coin toss. Swann starred in title games for the Steelers in the 1970s, Craig for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s, and Elway won consecutive Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999 with the Denver Broncos.
Swann and Elway are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The coin will be displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
"It is great to be associated with the premier sporting event in the world and knowing the game doesn't start without us," said Michael Kott, chief executive officer at The Highland Mint.
The Highland Mint, which is licensed by the National Football League to make the coin, has shipped dozens coins to Tampa, site of this year's big game. Some are going to NFL Hall-of-Famers, team members and other dignitaries.
The 100-employee company is making 10,000 coins to sell to the public for $69.95 each. A certificate of authenticity comes with each of the coins, which typically sell out every year. The Highland Mint also is producing two versions of a "Super Bowl Champions" coin -- one with a Steelers helmet and one with a Cardinals helmet.
The coins featuring the game's winner will be distributed to the team and sold for $29.95 to fans and collectors.
The coins depicting the losing team will be melted down.
Who does Kott want to win? Whichever team generates the most sales, of course.
"That is really hard to say, but probably there are definitely more Steelers fans as they have a national following, and if they win it will be a record sixth Super Bowl," Kott said. "However if the Cardinals win it will be their first Super Bowl victory, which should be extremely strong in Phoenix."
