That might be a split serif RPM. It's hard to tell from the angle you shot from, but is there a similar split on the top serif?

If it's only on the lower serif many of them have that. It's the corner broken off the punch they were using and used on many of 79-Ds.

It could be if both serifs show it.

It is hard to see the top serif, too bad we don't have a good reverse photo also to match up the other die markers.

The markers look for it, maybe it's a later die state than the listed one. The column crack is grown longer and the other columns are getting them.

Did you find a boatload of them in a bag?

Ya, Looks like 5,000 in the bag and all most all of them are like that.

If that many of them have it and you don't see anything on the top serif then maybe it's the broken punch.

I looked at a roll of 79-Ds and about 1/3 have the broken off lower serif. I also notice that some of them and some without the broken serif have similar markers.... column cracks and the crack on the buildings lower corner. Those markers might be similar on many dies from that year.
