Do you have a dollar amount you will not exceed when buying a coin?

I don't mean when you are going to a show and say "I am not spending more than $xxx amount"....I mean do you say "I will not spend over $xxx" for one coin.

believe me...

many times i had to keep the wallet in the back pocket on the left ....and the checkbook in the front pocke on the right.

and with the smoke coming off of both of them...if they should wind up in the same pocket...they'd be a FIRE fer sure !

no not really but i've found when i have atleast 1k to spend i usually opt for 2 or 3 coins instead of 1 i guess im trying to fill holes in to many series as i've yet to focus on just one.

I never know what I'm going to find at a show. Many times I'll spend all my money on one coin. I do like quality vs quantity. More often than not when the cash runs out many dealers will let me take a few more coins home on credit. Seems like I always overspend by about $2000.

Yes. Based on some of the stuff I've read here, I'm limiting my spending to no more than $1000 per coin (maybe $1200) for a while. Rumor is coins less than $1000 are likely to hold their value better over the next couple years than more expensive coins. I know it's all just opinion... But I guess that's what we express on these forums.

There are a few coins I wish to purchase that exceed the $1000 limit (two by about $10,000), I'm just going to wait a year or two and see how the economy shakes out. Maybe the price of these will drop a bit.

I have this complicated process that I go through. First is what I think the coin is worth. Second is.......I don't know.

the dollar amount i will not exceed is what the coin is worth when
if i tried to sell it today via the BST or ebay...

getting buried in a coin is something i always try to avoid. i do not
get caught up in a bidding frenzy or bite on a coin with a high asking
price.

but lately.. i have not spent anything. why bother? things are finally
starting to soften and i have other better uses for my spare cash.

Not really it depends on what I can actually buy. A certain dollar amount would not cause me too not buy something unless of course I didnt have the funds to cover it.

I can't imagine spending $100 for a coin. To put it simply there are just more important things I could do with that money, like buy food or pay bills. And living in NY, both are more expensive then most everywhere else.

So far the most I've spent on a single coin was $25.

I can't say that it won't change in time, and in fact I hope it does, but at this point in my life I can't imagine spending over $10,000 on a coin. There are plenty of coins I would love to own, but I'm just not at a place where I would feel comfortable spending over that on 1 coin that I planned to keep in my collection.

The other side of that is if a coin I had had grown in value as to be worth $15,000 liquid in today's environment, I would probably decide that I couldn't afford to keep it. (Lost Opportunity Cost)

DISCLOSURE: I have never spent 10K on a coin.

Most of my purchases have to pass the muster test of my wife. She keeps a tight wallet and me on a budget. Its frustrating some times but it keeps me out of the poor house over coins. So that said any coin I can't get under $10 or sell something else to pay for it I have to discuss it with her.

I don't have a set limit, but I only have 1 coin I have spent over $1k on. I've bid on coins up to $2k but not won them, the majority of mine are in the $2-600 range with some higher and some lower.

Not really, but it kinda limits what one can buy. If something really nice trips my trigger I mite go a little extra, but mostly I just kinda accept when to say when. I'd rather feel sad and pass now than sadder and regretful later.

The most I've ever spent for 1 coin is $1,200 (bought two $1,000 coins as well), but I could easily see myself spending $30, $40, $50,000+ for a single coin.

That is an interesting way to put it. I think of things that way sometimes. I will never buy a gun for more than I would spend on a coin. (average coin, not ultra coin)

I mostly collect Capped Bust halves in VF-AU and I try to get most of my coins for under $300 each.I have never spent more than $1000 on a single coin.Of course if the opportunity to buy a real money maker came along(a coin that I could buy,and immediately sell for a good profit)I would go quite a bit higher.

I agree with FC here on this, my thoughts exactly.

I try not to set any limit on buying a coin, but i have never kept a coin for long that i spent more than 1500 dollars on it. My comfort zone and my budget are 2 different numbers.
