iPods and coins - who'd a thunk it

So I'm meeting with the CU Forum's very own Blu62vette at lunch. He had just photographed 30 coins for me and I was meeting him to get my photos and pay him. And to have lunch. GREAT photos BTW - I expect they'll be very useful in selling these coins. He's a pro with that camera.

So after the usual numismatic banter, the talk turns to iPods. These are a little device about the size of a thin cell phone that can be used to store and playback photos, movies, music. They can be used to surf the web, check email, blah blah blah.

I'm interested in the topic because I have a 3-year old that likes to watch Scooby-Doo and other kids movies. Thus far, she's been a little tough on the 8 inch Sony DVD player and I'm thinking I'll buy an iPod, load movies and let kid-unit watch them on a little screen. She should like it - it's little, like her.

So Blu62vette pulls out his iPod touch and we talk. Turns out he has stored photos of his collection on the thing and takes it with him to shows. He explains to me that if he's looking for an upgrade for a coin, he doesn't have to try and remember what the coin looks like, he just pulls up the photo and blam-o he can see the thing.

So I go over to Target and buy an iPod touch for my kid (Scooby-Doo in Where's My Mummy is downloading now). I get back to work and of course I want to check out the new toy. Apple really nailed the interface. Very easy to use even for an old ludite like me.

I think my days of carrying around my little note-book with my collection inventoried maybe over, or at least augmented with an iPod. I may just have to buy a second one for me.

how do the photos look? Pretty "true" compared to a computer monitor?

The contrast and color on the iPod touch is as good as my Dell 19" monitor at work and much better than my Compaq laptop display. The think I like is that the high-res photos scale nicely, but with a little gesture on the screen with your fingers, you can zoom into details. GREAT for seeing marks and other surface details. Good for helping to remember what a coin looks like or sharing with a buddy at a show or B&M.

ipod touch is a great device but battery life sucks!

The two guys that I work with say they get good battery life (like 24 hours for music and 4 hours for video on a single charge). What do you get? Do the batteries wear out with time? I haven't a clue how the batteries last for viewing photos.

I have the same on my iphone. Battery life is fine for me. But if you spend hours searching the net, it will burn the battery. Pics are very sharp and clear. You can even save pics from any website onto your phone.

I got the second generation the first day it came out, and I LOVE it. The applications are great, the interface is easy to use, and then of course there's movies, songs, photos. You can sync your calendar from your computer, your address book, YouTube, stocks, weather; all wirelessly. Games, utilities, and all kinds of programs.

Definitely worth the money. Buy the 8GB if you don't plan on downloading a lot of video to the device - go for a larger storage space if you do.

The one thing I'm wondering is how my kid is going to get adult sized ear piece in little girl sized ears. Maybe a loop of Scotch tape...

They come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. I think they're about $229, $299, and $399 respectively.

I keep all my want and inventory and upgrade lists on my iPhone. I'm that guy at the Parsippany shows always playing with his iPhone.

My iPhone is great. I use "Air Sharing" to sync my Microsoft Word and Excel etc, docs, like my want lists, and my inventory. I have all my coin pics synced as well, and the ability to zoom in and out by "pinching" the picture is phenomenal. The iPod part is great to watch flix, the Safari browser is OK, and the the eReader keeps my eBooks synced to read at the drop of a hat. Plus the phone is pretty cool. Check it out.

Garmin GPS works good for that too, you can just insert your SD card into it and view the pics.

i have the 1st gen ipod touch. not sure if they improved battery life on the 2nd gen but im sure they did.

Listen closely. Stay away from iPods. They'll lead you to iPhones and iMacs and Macbooks and illicit drugs.

I know...I've been using PC's since before there were PC's (back in the Radio Shack TRS80 days, late '70's). And one day my wife gave me an iPod. Today I'm in rehab.

Stay away from iPods if you value free thinking.

If you want something even better than a ipod touch look at the archos 7. It has all the features of the ipod touch but a bigger screen and better battery life.

This is really nothing new, I've been doing the same as long as I've had the appropriate IPod. One needs to read the manual every now and then.

I get a solid 24 or more hours from a recharge after an almost total discharge. Probably a solid 6-8 hours if used just for pictures/slideshow etc. but who would really use it that long for pics?

I think it is great to have.

I have many folders of different pics, close-ups, lots of good stuff. When I have it at shows people seem to really like the thought of having that much info. I also have excel and word files on mine. Never noticed any issues with battery life.

I think the screen resolution is amazing.
