The letters that my daughter and I send out are always handwritten. It seems that the "personal touch" goes a long way, especially with the retired athletes. The toughest success that her and I have received was from Jean Ratelle. It took 19 months before he returned her card and from what I understand, he is tough to get.
It doesn't make to much of a difference between typed and written. When I type one I usaully add something along the lines of pardon the typed letter but my handwritting is very bad.My toughest succes was Niekro before he started charging and Peyton Manning. If you have any other questions shootme a pm. Mike
I always hand write my letters . I always make sure its about 3/4 of a page long . I always make sure to say please and thank you . As far as my toughest , I would have to say John Smoltz , I sent to him at least 8 times before i finally got 2 signed cards back.
A collector of all things Braves Always looking for Chipper Jones cards. Im a very focused collector of cards from 1909 - 2012...LOL
I had little business cards made up. Sorry but most times these guys are going to sign or they won't so it really makes little difference on how you ask. If you are sending out a bunch, it's not practical to write everyone a letter. Some of my favorite returns have been Hank Aaron, Carlton Fisk and Kareem.

My best success so far has been Mike Ditka, he seems to be very hit or miss.
