Help on settings needed to view # of responses to thread.

I frequently see posters comment on the number of replies to a particular thread, or who jokingly try to be post #100 and so forth. My opening page displays the current number of posts to a particular thread, but when i open the thread, the replies are not numbered in any fashion...at least not that I can see. Is there some setting I am missing that will number each post so if someone refers me to post # so and so in a certain thread, I can get there quickly? Thanks for any help the tech savy may provide.

..................the only thing i do is click on search and put in your 'handle' name and look for any new responses.

Seriously, there are 20 responses per page, but the first page only has 19 because the OP doesn't count as a reply, so the top of every page is a multiple of 20. For instance, page 2 here will be post 20 at the top, Page 6 will be post 100 at the top.

.... Unless you click on the CUSTOMIZE button at the top of the page, and select "50" or a different number, for How many messages do you want listed when you enter a thread? like I did. Saves a lot of clicking.
