Bowers and Merena, Long Beach

I finaly got around to looking at Bowers and Merena's latest auction offerings. I must say I was a bit disappointed with the selection. I was only looking at the early and seated dollars, but found nothing of interest. In the past I have always been able to find a few things to watch and bid on, and found their service to be great.

Unfortunately, I could not find a single item to even watch in the upcoming auction. I also noticed they are tightening up on their terms. No returns, for ANY reason. Increased shipping, changes in buyback bids, etc.

The first thing that came to mind was, this must be a fallout from the FUN results. Just another sign that the tougher current coin market is starting to emerge for even the major auction houses. Just my sense of things.

which auction are you speaking of? The "collectors choice" auction looks about normal to me.

I have heard from an excessively reliable source (and former forum member aka Dealer F) that it is a Collector's Choice auction. This is one in which the riff-raff like you and I disgorge the lower value coins from our assemblages and dealers dump their cheap dregs and hope to stick someone else with them. Lower your expectations and think Heritage Internet only or Stack's monthly, and you will be of the correct mindset.

This is not a live auction, just a catalogue sale of mostly bulk items, less suitable for a live floor auction, etc. Still a wealth of coins.

I viewed the lots or lack there of from the Long Beach Bowers And Merena auction and it is very lean. Pretty much a waist of time. This has been going on for a while with them. Just not offering much!

This upcoming sale prior to Long Beach is a "Collectors' Choice" auction, which lots mostly consist of bulk items that are more oriented to dealers. These sales are similar to Heritage's "Gallery Sales" auctions which are not advertised to the public. Many of the lots will consist of dozens if not hundreds of coins with many housed in rolls, making photography unfeasible.

The terms and conditions of this sale are consistent with the "Gallery Sales" and all other prior "Collectors' Choice" sales. Some lots can literally weigh 100 or more pounds so that is why actual shipping costs are billed. Again, the terms in this sale are consistent with the previous similar auctions. There is no "fallout" from FUN or any other prior auction.

It definitely pays to view the lots in person in these sales before bidding on any lot that includes uncertified coins
