Hmmm..I didn't know that they would fix "mechanical errors" and send them back "free

Did you?
I thought one still had to pay the high shipping fees but, looking at the FAQ for submissions, I just noticed this:

Q: What should I do if my coin is labeled incorrectly?
A: PCGS will correct, free of charge, any mislabeled coins. Please fill out a submission form, mark "Other" as the service level, write in "Mechanical Error" and include a short note on the form describing the mistake. Be sure to write in the Declared Value for your coin. If you are not a Collectors Club member, please contact Customer Service at (800) 447-8848 or info@pcgs.com to have a submission form mailed to you. Please mark the outside of your shipping box “Mech. Error". PCGS will fix the label and reholder your coin in approximately 10 business days and ship the coin back to you free of charge.

(I did the bolding). Maybe I will drop off my FB roosie that isn't labeled FB but is FB and shows up in the database as FB.

Anyone done the mechanical error correcting and were you charged shipping back to you?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

FB is a matter of expert grader opinion and I imagine you'd have to pay the full grading fee for that. Mechanical error refers to the matter being based on fact. Coin is labelled as 2006 when it is 2008, or labelled as Scientist when it is Founding Father (as it relates to the 2006 Ben Franklin commems), etc.

Good luck, though; I could be wrong.

I would agree with you if it wasn't in the database as such. The coin is pretty much a no-brainer on the FB. Very crisp and clear and I bought it from someone who just sold what was on the label, when I was first starting out (so, I was just buying what was on the label).
Difference in value is neglible between FB and non, for this coin/grade.

Regardless, though, I am interested if anyone has done a mechanical error and had it sent back "gratis"....

I just had this same problem in the last few days, got an e-mail from Peter at PCGS said to send the coin back and it would be corrected for free all the way around, with a credit to use covering the shipping to PCGS. I have a 1960 67 Dcam Franklin, labeled as a Cam, PCGS is going to fix it when I send it in. Difference in my coin is about 200 in price difference...I was happy to see they will correct at their expense....

Good to know I have a 1917-S FB Merc... that is marked as a Philly on the label that needs to go back.

just be careful with the mechanical error thing, we sent in a MS-60 seated dollar for 'mechanical error' that came back pf-58 with no compensation. Took about 6 months of image but we finally got a check for the difference, what a PITA though!

I had a 74-D DDO Kennedy that they put in a non-DDO holder. I was able to send it back and they put it in a DDO holder at no cost. I never was reimbursed for the shipping there but I never made an issue of it either. They shipped it back to me on their dime.

This looks like a nice coin based on the image:

I sold the coin and the buyer sent me this image:

Somehow the debris must have happened in the slabbing room.

Sent an email to PCGS about this and was told to send it in as a Mechanical Error with no return or grading fees. I also was told: Once the error is corrected, you may contact us for a grading voucher to compensate you for your shipping costs. This voucher will arrive separate from your order. image

Does the coin number on the holder match the one for FB?

Edit: I had a 1957 50c proof that came up not found when I looked up the certification number. PCGS reholdered it and put it in the system free of charge.

I have had to send a couple of coins in for mechanical errors. It was free, and they paid the returned shipping. All I paid for was the postage to get the coins to them.

Last time I contacted CS about returning a "mechanical error" for correction, I was verbally promised a grading voucher as comp. for my shipping cost to PCGS. I'm still waiting for the voucher. I've had the corrected "mechanical error" back for almost two months now.image

About time they made this a public documented policy.
