Perhaps let your dealer friend negotiate the deal next time.....that way if the deal is consumated you get to still split and he presumably buys the deal at a lower cost.image

<< <i>I hate to say it, but there appears to be an unwritten law between dealers that if you are not a dealer you do not get dealer pricing. Looks like you should have had your dealer friend buy the whole lot and then you and him divide them up.

    I >>

And why not? Why shouldn't dealers give other dealers wholesale pricing and price coins at retail to the public? It is somewhat of a gentleman's agreement. However, it doesn't happen with a complete unknown person. Anyone can walk up and say "Hi, I'm a dealer, give me a discount" and I see that ALL the time from someone that either thinks of himself as a dealer because he's sold a few coins, or is just trying to get a better price. There's also generally considerations with a wholesale relationship... such as overniting product, overniting or wiring payment, product going in both directions, doing favors for one another. I think it's more about the total relationship. For me, if a customer acts like a dealer and plays the game like a dealer, I will treat him as a dealer. If a collector plays the collector game, I will treat him as a collector. Actually, I had one customer... retail guy, very nice man. He would call me up, tell me what items he wanted, offered me 95% of our asking price and that he would wire the payment that afternoon. Never once turned him down, and he even got more than a few items from me for below my normal wholesale price, stuff that had already been priced real cheaply to move it. One of the best customers I've ever had.

Now, for RYK, I would think that with the kind of money he has spent with some very good dealers, that he probably does get some price breaks that an unknown would not get from the same dealer. Part of that is building a relationship and building a reputation. RYK is not the type to screw around with a dealer, he makes a decision, he goes with it, he pays up, and there's no fuss. He's the kind of collector a dealer loves to have has a customer. Also, in this kind of situation, with the kind of money that I imagine he and his dealer-friend would have been spending, I would have expected the lot to be sold at wholesale levels, or close to it.

I say, if the prices are right from Dealer B, buy the coins. Screw Dealer A. Let him play his games with someone else. Move on, warn others, and know better for the future.

If I was offered something for $1000, and was tempted but pass

and then a few months later see the same thing for $800 - I would probably buy it

may be same coin or not

and next time I saw dealer A, I would mention I was glad I passed on his offer as I bought similar stuff within 6 months for only 80% of his asking
and I had money left over to buy even more neat stuff

and if I was on a bourse, I would make a quick glance of his stuff before walking away

At face value, there was nothing terribly wrong. Despite that we were looking at a $60k or so purchase, if he did not want to offer a competitive price, fine. When I pass, if he says something like, "Thanks anyway, maybe next time," we remain on cordial terms and all live to play another day.

What really irked me was the unnecessary comeback with the dig. That's when I decided that I would never contact this person for a coin transaction again. At the FUN show, I actively avoided making contact with him.

But when I saw the coins in the inventory of another dealer at a much lower price, suggesting that he lied to me in the snooty comeback, I thought that this guy really takes the cake.

BTW, for those who wondered why I did not have my dealer-friend initiate the contact, he told me flat out that he does not like dealing with this person. I can see why. image

What exactly did Dealer A say? In retrospect, you should have made him an offer instead of passing.

RYK, you know he took a shot at you ... and then a "parting shot." I know dealers do it, but still don't understand why. There are a couple of dealers I would never buy a coin from directly. I have had a friend or two make a purchase from them though because of some crap like this. I've also played the role of the friend as well.

    << <i>

When I passed, Dealer A's parting shot was along the lines of "Your loss, nice coins sell quickly, take a hike, loser!" He did not say that, but this is what I read between the lines. He also indicated that a dealer bought these coins at the same price they were offered to me.

Well, lo and behold, I am perusing the inventory of Dealer B, one who is extremely well-known and liked by members of the forum (no, not Dealer F, another one image ), and I see three of these coins in this Dealer B's inventory. There is no question that these are the same coins, and the pricing is considerably lower than what was offered to me. Substantially lower. Either Dealer A was fibbing, or Dealer B won't be in business long.
    >>

RYK, is the above, that I stripped from the OP, correct? Particularly the bolded part?
If so, I'm confused by that. When you were talking to him about not taking the coins, did you talk to him after that, again? Or, was it the final time? If he told you that it was fine for you not to buy because a "dealer bought these coins at the same price they were offered", then dealer "B" seems to have already agreed to them with dealer "A" and you either weren't going to get the coins (already sold) or there was something else fishy going on.

Now, if you talked to him again, after turning down the deal initially, and he made the dealer comment, then that is different.

Have you asked dealer "B" about the coins yet?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The course of action seems obvious to me, go with a modified version of one of Longacre's plans: the Coin Dealer Ferrari Fund. In order to maintain good relations and keep all coin dealers in business during these hard times, enough coins should be purchased from each dealer in the story so they can go out and buy a new Ferrari, or at least have their existing fleet of Ferrari's detailed and overhauled.

Rude dealers are a dime a dozen, and probably more common than nice-guy dealers. Some dealers do price very high and almost make it seem like it is a privilege to do business with them. It isn't personal, those dealers probably treat most of their customers as marks. If they don't think you will play that role, they have no use for you and will not miss you. They might offer coins at reasonable prices to other dealers, but almost never to a collector.

    RYK... My short story...

At a show, Dealer P was firm at $7000 for an item.

I expressed real interest but felt that the asking price was a bit high.... and said that I would think about it.

A while later, on the other side of the room, the same dealer SOLD the piece to Dealer R for $4000.

Now, I am not a dealer... and I under stand dealers selling to each other for less for several reasons.

Reason 1.... Dealer R needs some "room". Reason 2.... You cut me a deal and some time later I will cut you a deal.

    BUTTTTTT........

If Dealer P had quoted me $5500 ..... He would have been $1500 cash to the better.

As it turned out.... I made the purchase with Dealer R for $4500.

Dealer P was $1500 short --- and --- Dealer R was $500 to the better in less than an hour.

Wonder why Dealer P is always short of funds and biz is always bad..... buttt not so for Dealer R ??? image

    Here's a possibility:

Dealer P had the coin on memo from Dealer R at $4500. He was looking for the home run, and when he struck out, gave the coin back to Dealer R. Dealer R wanted his $4500 and did not care who gave him the $4500: you, Dealer P, or Mother Teresa.

You should have taken the coin back to the original
dealer and offered it to him for 5 grand, which was
2 grand less than he was trying to sell it to you for.

    That would have been funny.

    Still no winner.

Let's recall, the thread is about Dealer A and Dealer B. And, there are 3 hints above. I will give one more hint: The hits made by the musical group were "The Hitman" and "Move Boy Move". Now the answer is extremely easy, let's see if anyone gets it and wins the 2008 ASE. If no one gets it today, I will post the answer at 7 pm tonight.

I kinda wondered the same thing with regard to the OP's situation. How do we know that Dealer A didn't have these coins on memo from Dealer B in the first place? That would still make the statement "I sold these to another dealer for the same price I offered you" a lie, but it would explain why Dealer B had them in his list for much less money.

Either way, I agree that Dealer A is to be avoided, and I would have no issue buying the coins from Dealer B.

Dealer B recognized himself in the thread and contacted me. Nice guy that he is, he felt that he owed me an explanation. Nothing he told me changed the facts or my opinion of Dealer A. He did not make any attempt to sell me the coins (in fact, told me not to buy one of them), but we may have further discussions on this matter down the road.
