Peace Dollar NEWPS: 1921, R-6 VAM, and toner

The 21 is nice, the 23-D has bag toning but isn't really all that great. That said, color on Peace Dollars doesn't seem that common.
Anyone know the VAM on the 22-D?

    I disagree with you. That 23 is pretty cool. That said, I have something of an affinity for toned peace dollars. I'm glad there is another one like me out there. Unless I see you bidding against me, then you can go to hell.

    22 D is notorious for having many die cracks through that location of the neck. There are many different VAMs that look much alike unless you look at them very closely. The crack turning into a break between the R and V are what are important for defining this particular VAM.

    I just meant the coin was baggy, I'm not sure I deserve to be damned to hell for it. image Am I missing something here? For the record, I'm a pretty big toned Peace Dollar fan and I think that comment is pretty out of line here...

    Nicely toned Peace dollars seem to represent a much smaller percentage of available coins than toned Morgan dollars. I suspect part of the reason is that Morgans sat undisturbed for decades in mint, treasury and assay office vaults. Peace dollars were moved around every few years and did not have as long to tone as did Morgans.

    (Speculation.) Another part might be the slightly grainy surface of many Peace dollars which might inhibit migration of surface chemical reactions. Yet another possibility is that most Peace dollars were packaged in bags made from different canvas than in the 19th century….any parallels with 1921 Morgans?

    We didn’t go into toning much in the Guide Book to Peace Dollars – there were too few to work with.
