Some advice on a purchase

Ok recently I sold out one of my older hobbies on Ebay and believe it or not was pleasntly happy with the results. I now actually have something to invest into my coin hobby, (more than my usual 20 bucks).


I love most series (morgans, bust halves near the top) so if you had say about 300-400 bucks to blow right now what coin would you pull the trigger on.



Right now I have lots of things I am considerng and frankly cant make up my mind.

Here is some of the things that came to mind....

I thought about getting an example of a series I dont own like (Trade dollars, 1860's half, 3 cent, )
High(er) end Morgan ( best example I own is a MS63 common date)
Another Bust half
(leaning against) A few of the harder to afford modern commeratives
(leaning against) classic commeratives
(leaning against) any mint set or other modern type
Bottom Feeder collector, Happy collector of Moderns

    Seems like prices are inflated a bit on Nice Busties. Morgans are free to be had in all grades and any common MS65 or MS66 will still be a little common and your money will sit there for a while. Nice original Type stuff is great to buy, but 3-400 bucks ain't gonna get very far when you talk nice rarer quality pieces. The biggest thing is buy what YOU like.

    Coin wise: I'd buy a nice problem free circ 1921 P, D, or S Walker, or any other earlier date Walker in higher grade.....that's just me.
    Gun wise: I'd put that money with a little more and get me a nice high capacity semi-auto.

    Ug... Just when i thought I was past my Gun hobby.... lol


    I have a nice M4 carbine that keeps me safe a night. That and the 44, the 38.....

    You could look around for a nice 20 cent piece or perhaps a nice bust quarter. Take your time and buy something you really like is the best advice.

    OK I've read your post and you like a LOT of different series of US coinage...

    BUT what are you actually working towards Morgans, Bust Halves, Commems, 19th Century Type, etc. image

    It isn't hard to just make a spur of the moment $300-400 purchase...

    it's also not hard to get side tracked to find yourself working on a dozen different projects! image

    Nice, original PCGS/NGC Classic Commems have really come down in price, and can be had for about the same price as the dipped crap in PCGS/NGC holders.

    I would also make the same statement. Collect and buy what you like, not what others say you should collect or what the market is doing, as markets can change pretty easy. Another issue I have struggled with is buying coins in too many series' at once, and not focusing on a few series. For me, this willy-nilly style of collecting was hurting me more than helping me, so I had to refocus on just a few series' in order to make any headway on my sets.

    So, seeing what you wrote, I would think about getting another Bust Half. Continue on with what you have started. JMHO.

    Go to a coin show. Look and hold.

    Morgan Vam's can be fun and offer variety. Many can be had cheap.

    I have/had a number of $300+ Morgans, and frankly after you get one, they all look and feel the same.

    I have found Hard Time Tokens to be an enjoyable quest. Plenty of variety and many can be had for your usual $20. They are historical pieces offering commentary on the sorry state of the Union at the time.

    Flying Eagle cents with clashed dies are pretty neat...

    Buy what you like is my advice. I like the idea of buying a type of coin you don't already own personally
