Lot of Upgrading in Modern Type

Did you upgrade your set recently? 1/3 of the active sets did, especially sets near the top.
Seems no matter how hard I try to narrow the gap, the guys above find a way to widen it. Got my Walker in and pictured, and have a MS-63 Indian $10 on the way. Should be upgrading all of the gold to MS-62 or better in the next couple of weeks.

Congrats to me too! I sent in my two PQ liberty gold pieces and one of them, the quarter eagle, upgraded to a 65! That was a cheap upgrade, $30 plus shipping.
I'm glad to be back on the boards. I went away for the weekend and couldn't log in when I got back. Took a while to get my password again. I was able to update my set but couldn't talk about it. Whew
I saw that you added that piece and was wondering what it's story was. I'm not bidding on anything at Long Beach, but have a few bids in the next Kingswood sale. If I don't get any nibbles there, found a place with some good gold prices and should start the upgrade process. First thing in the plan is to move my AU-58 Saint to a MS-65 as soon as I can get my tax refund back.

Guess, at tax time people are using their refund to expand their collections a little.
Congrats on your addations and upgrades!

Also picked up a pair of coins for my new Complete Type sets. Only need 15 more pieces to catch up to Carl.

Catch up to me on complete type With my tax money going the other way from you guys it looks like this year will be like last year, only with complete type rather than modern type.
It goes like this. I start the year on the main page in 5'th place. My set is not complete. Everybody above and below me buys coins faster than me. At the end of the year, after buying several coins, I'll be lucky to be in the top 10.
So I think I'm going to focus on a smaller set, maybe a basic type set if we get one, I'm not sure yet. With just a few upgrades I might be able to get my modern set in the top 5 for more than 15 minutes so will look at that as well. Unfortunately I'm running lower on excess coins to sell which fueled my collecting last year.
Have fun gang!!
Now instead of needing an MS62-63 Barber half and an MS63-64 With Motto Saint, I have an MS64 Barber and lack only the two Saints for completion. They should be easy enough to find in 63-64 when the time comes to fill the last two holes. I guess my set average will go up microscopically, as well...
Carl- on a completely opposite topic from Registry sets, WhiteTornado offered me some "Holey" coins for my vest, but they weren't anything I needed. I told him to pass them on to you or somebody else with the dreaded "holeyitis" disease. How is your Holey Coin project going? I forget if you were going to do a vest or jacket, or if you were gonna start small, with something like a hat. I just shipped that 1746 halfpenny and whatever else it was you won on eBay. Heads up. Hopefully they will arrive soon. Good luck on the quarter- was it the SLQ you've been looking for? Good luck also on your 15 minutes in the top five. I hope to get my own 15 minutes there one day. When I complete Modern Type with those two Saints, I will most likely be joining the fun on "The Big Set", i.e. Complete Type. Last time I looked I think I was #16 current there, and #9 current on Modern Type. As to your saying

I am in the same boat. I'm back on eBay with more cheapo world coins. They are doing OK, but it will take dozens or maybe hundreds of them to add up to a Saint for my set. (First I have to pay Larry the rest of the Barber half money, too).
Keith- good luck with the MS62 gold. With my No Motto Saint gone (not deleted yet, though), all my gold is MS62, except the $20 Lib in 63 and the $10 Lib in 61 (which deserved at least a 62- hell, I cracked it out of an ANACS 63 slab, after all! ) MS62 is an awesome value in my opinion, like AU58 is in some other collections. I'm sure I've chanted this little mantra over and over until everyone is sick of hearing it. When I go back to the 19th century coins, I predict that more than a few AU58's will be appearing in my set.
Speaking of the 19th century, how does everybody like my new icon? That's a coin from my old pre-Registry 1798-2000 nongold set. It was an ANACS PR62 RB, though I don't know how ANACS came up with the "B" in "RB"- there wasn't a speck of brown on that l'il Injun. Maybe it was that cool, colorful toning which wasn't exactly "red". I guess they shoulda given it PR62 GP (gold/pink) It scanned nicely in the original (larger) picture. I sold that coin last summer, but it was one of those nice pieces with great eye appeal at a relatively lower grade and price... the kind I often get sentimental about. Had I known I would complete the Modern Type set in less than a year (and I will), I would have kept that one and tried to cross it.
Good luck to you, my worthy competitors. Once the Big Kahuna Barber half is paid off and entered in my set, my final countdown will begin... time to start singin' When The Saints Come Marching In!
Bill- I see you're wearing a new icon, too. Cool! A trifle strange, but definitely cool. Looks like something from the old Elric stories (Melnibonean Myths)... or maybe a Roger Dean creation. (Roger Dean, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is the guy who did all those cool album covers on the classic Yes albums, as well as some for the 80's group Asia. I love his work.)
Keith- I went and looked at the Walker. Lovely! I still like my white one a bit better, but you scored yourself a heck of a pretty coin. Congats. I'll bet yours is far more attractive in person.
Carl- I just looked at the pictures on your set for the first time. I thought the PR67 Buffalo impressed me (I am rather fond of my MS67). That is, I was impressed with your Buffalo until I saw your Barber dime. Ohmygosh! The reverse on that coin! Oooooooh.... I'm in love!
(maybe lust would have been a better choice of words, come to think of it...)
Thanks also for the comments on the pics. That buffalo was one of the first type coins I bought back in '97.
I wish whoever last had my 1907 proof set took better care of them. The clear plastic slide scuffed up the obverses of all the coins. Still a great, matched set. To be competitive I'll need to upgrade that half but woudn't want to break up the set. I think I'll send the dime in for regrading, I think it should get a cameo designation.
