In specific case, slabbed worth premium?

Speaking specifically of the 2008 W unc. gold Eagle, 1/4 oz, cost from the mint right now is just under $300.
Would it be worth the premium to buy already slabbed, graded MS70 by NGC, as opposed to buying the raw coin?
I've seen them as MS70 in the $400 range, so the premium is a substantial $100 or a little more.

I think in the long run, this coin may be rare enough to command a premium, just wondering if better to invest
in the grading up front, or take a chance on the raw version from the mint . . .

What are you interested in? If you want a holdered coin because it has a high number, buy the coin that way. If you want the same coin, but don't need a high number on the packaging, buy the piece from the Mint and save some money. If you're really asking so you can invest, then count me out of useful advice. I think high grade certified moderns commanding premiums is ridiculous.

You used the "i" word ('invest"). In most cases, those that ask about investing, know very little. If you don't know much, the rule of thumb would be to go with the lower grade, lower price, and/or buying directly from the U. S. Mint.

If you want to buy slabbed 70s, I strongly suggest you learn to grade them for yourself first. That goes for any grade where there is a premium price tag.
