Silver Bicentennial Quarter?

Were any of the bicentennials silver? I found a 1976s that appears to at least be plated silver.

There was a 3 coin silver proof set. Quarter, Kennedy Half and Ike Dollar.

There were two versions of the 40% silver unc. One was
made to mint set standards and one was run off on high
speed presses and roughly handled.

Yeah I figured it was probably 40% cause the sides are similar to the 40% kennedys. Thanks!

I also found a vf-ish 1945s wartime today!

How were they distributed? Were they placed into circulation? I don't remember, probably preoccupied at the time........

Clad quarter weight = 5.67 grams
40% silver weight = 5.75 grams
90% (none in 1976) = 6.25 grams

Here's an easy way to tell the silver from the copper-nickel. Place the coin and a known copper-nickel quarter (or other copper-nickel clad coin) next to each other. Place a clean, unused Kleenex (or other tissue) over the top of the coins. A silver coin will appear "whiter" than the copper-nickel coin. If both are the same color, then the suspect coin is copper-nickel. And for you science geeks...add a positive control and place a known silver coin under the tissue so you can know what to expect.

This was a fun "magic" trick I enjoyed doing while working with the public at a B&M shop years ago. We had a lot of people bringing in Ike dollars and they wanted to know how to tell if they were the 40% silver clad pieces.

The set was sold at banks. I remember getting one from a local bank as a kid.

INteresting to note it was sold at banks.

I do not recall that at all.

The mint sold them.

Round one had better coins and the insert plastic has a white strip.

Round two had a shiner red envelope and no white strip and aweful looking coins (Yes it's a run on sentence). I think they put them in a blender before they packed them.

The only 76-S Bicentennial that isn't silver is the one in the clad proof set. The other two are 40%(3 pc. uncirculated set and 3 pc. proof set).
