Question on Stone Mt Commem

Was just reading QDB's latest commem Red Book. It repeated (I think) that the 1st 1,000 St. Mt's were struck on a medal press for presentations. Have these been definitively traced to a certain die, or is there anyway to tell these from the other million regular ones?

No indication in his older commem book, either. Would be interesting to know if there are good die markers.

Kevin Flynn's new commemorative book might sort this out. I've seen the coin presented to President Coolidge, and it does not look like a satin or sandblast proof (as would have been made on a medal press).

Having been a student of this design for many years (distribution, counterstamps, etc.), I can say that I have never seen anything close to a presentation piece. Many GEMs, but no prooflike or matte coins.

I know you didn't specifically ask about this, but I thought you might be interested to see this. I was lucky enough to purchase this several years ago. It is a limited edition of 100 and was put together for the dedication in 1970. The coin and medal are in flips which are stapled to a card. No idea where the commems came from - obviously they were set aside for years.

If anyone has any idea on value, I would appreciate knowing.

I'm a serious collector of Stone Mountain exonumia - the medals are readily available for about $25.00 for nice ones. I would guess the cover would be worth about the same. The medal in the packaging was made by Medallic Art because the U.S. Mint medals would not be available until 1971. The original price for your version of the medal was $2.50 + .11 tax.

It's almost certain that the halves were purchased at the time of the promotion in unc. rolls. Can't tell the grade of the one in your set but if it's commercial unc. the total value would be somewhere around $100.00 - $125.00.
