Album display options for world coins?

I am thinking about putting some of my world coins into albums. So far as I can determine, the top-line Intercept-Shield albums are all cut and sized for U.S. coins. For example, here is one that is sized for Ike dollars:

With the above option, you could not have a mixed-sized type display from one country in a single album, and if you were displaying a whole series from some country, you'd have to do a lot of measuring to try and find the best size in US coin albums. And then on top of that, the cover and box of the album would be mis-labeled. I mean, you would not want to put a series of crowns in an Ike album, I think. You'd have to do some tidy stickering and re-labeling.

Another option is to use PVC-free three-ring binder pages, such as:

What album solutions do you all use? What recommendations and considerations do you have? Are there generic top-line Intercept Shield solutions? Do you have other PVC-free recommendations?

I've asked this on several different occasions about different storage techniques. I think this is something we should sticky (if we can do that) and just add to the thread as times go on, this way new folks coming in will have all the answers without having to search for them.

I have old Whitman Bookcase Albums, Dansco Albums, US Mint Albums, Gardmaster, 2x2 flips in boxes and clear pages, and I have Airtites that I put in the clear pages for binders. I like the Albums the best because I think they look better and offer more protection for the coins. I absolutely hate 2x2's but they seem to be a necessary evil at this time. The Gardmaster Album I ahve is for Canadian Large Cents. Nice album but a bit cumbersome to use and flip through. I do not ahve any Littleton albums or intercepts though... I am looking into ordering some Dansco pages for my German 1 marks, you just have to get the correct MM size.... I did send off for a free sample of the Eagle Snap 2x2 coin holder (Eagle Holders) but was not impressed with them... I REALLY like the airtites with the foam rings inside but they are a pain in the butt to store because they are round so I have to stick them in the clear binder pages... I would go with Albums to store coins in that you are making sets of... The rest you'll have to decide whether you want to slab them, put them in airtites, 2x2's, or some other single coin holder....

My 3rd Reich 2-5 RM set is housed in an untitled Eagle™ album, using their hard plastic 2x2 holders (which use mylar window inserts). These sit in Eagle's stiff plastic pages for their thick 2x2s, (the pages are of the same material as their certified coin [slab] pages).

Another option is available from Dansco™. They offer untitled albums of varying thickness and untitled pages available in window sizes from 16mm to 55 mm (one size per page).

These are available from various supply companies; I've had good experiences with Brent-Krueger. -Preussen

Edited to add: Todd - I see that you beat me to the Eagle 2x2 description (I guess I type too slowly), but personally, I have found them quite useful. In addition to my 3rd Reich set, I also use them for various raw Prussian coins in my collection. I found them to be quite versatile because you can add mylar windows of varying thicknesses to better secure some of the thinner-than-normal minor coins. JMO -Preussen

I use the Dansco mm pages described above to store German Empire 1-5mark coins. They work very well for storing a single denomination on a page. Not so well for the type set collection. I'll have to look into the Eagle 2x2s. That might be what I've been looking for for my world type set needs.

I've always thought it odd that there are not more albums for world coin type sets. Just a supply and demand thing I suppose?

My thoughts are as follows:

1. Size up all your coins.
2. Buy enough coin-friendly (no plasticizers) 2x2s in each size that will fit the coins snugly - there's nothing worse than having a tiny coin rattling around in a giant 2x2s.
3. Insert coins into 2x2s. Label the 2x2s as you wish.
4. Buy an album that takes 2x2s (as in your option two above)

Although you can buy national stamp albums with everything ready to be stuck on for most countries, the same range doesn't exist for coins.

Other storage options are pages with slots of differing sizes, as your option 3 above, see here for something similar:

My problem with this latter approach is that there's a limited range of page sizes compared with the very wide variety of coin sizes, and you are not flexible as to mixing and matching sizes on the page.

So I'd say coins in 2x2s inside pages is the way to go.

I believe that Dansco does offer custom albums, but they are quite cost-prohibitive. I believe that Ron Guth once checked into them for a particular German coin series…perhaps he’ll read this and comment. -Preussen

Edited to add: Of course, the more people who would order the same custom album, the lower the price-per album would be.

The Dansco custom album idea above peaked my interest. I just spoke with a Dansco company rep, and Preussen is correct. They do offer custom albums and they are absolutely cost-prohibitive (at least for me).

They offer Custom lettering of the binder covers for $9.95 (not bad actually)
For custom pages with varying hole diameters and labeling, the charge is $300 per page to create the dies and a minumum order of 500 pages for each die created (ballpark cost for 500 pages is $2K).

Soooo...looks like I'm back to 2x2s and clear pages :-)

I did ask if they had any plans to offer any additional world coin albums. The rep responded that they just haven't seen the demand for them.

Kudos to the Dansco rep, he was very patient and extremely helpful.

I used custom-drilled capital plastic holds to mount coins on pages in my collection. Recently did similar with exhibit of Colorado Territorial gold now on display at the Colorado Historical Society. The custom drilling for holders wasn't too bad - holders cost maybe $15 each average.

Hah! This I can talk about...

I pestered the forum stalwarts quite a bit a few years ago, searching for attractive ways to house (and display) a world coin collection.

I finally settled on a small glass corner curio cabinet for larger silver crowns, medals, and US Proofs, etc.

For the rest, there were many kinds of specialised albums available, but for efficiency (and looks) I went with 20 coin album pages for neatly annotated 2x2's, but housed them in attractive, large, higher-end leather or leatherette 3- ring binders.

Ed to add: the Cacheman's Cabinet would be my ideal for housing coins.

I wonder if Dansco would take some of it's blank pages that it sells and simply print the dates and such on it for a price... I wouldn't need them to cut out a new page...

I use the Dansco 7000 albums (twelve 2x2 slots per page, unlabeled). I then insert one coin per slot inside mylar saf-t-flips with my descriptive tag in the flip. Can't see the back of the coin unless you pull it out, but it works for me.

I asked the Dansco rep that question and his response was that they don't provide that service for the blank pages. He recommended clear Avery labels for creating the date/mintark labels. I had tinkered with the idea of having a sheet of dry transfer labels created for this purpose, but the Avery idea is probably cheaper. If I end up using them, I'll post my results.

My Dansco has been holding up well--I keep it in an archival sleeve and the coins have been fine so far.

For awhile I tried the 2x2s in (nov-pvc) pages in a three ring binder for my OFEC. Only the OFEC got out of control with my SFSC (several from some countries) difficulties. No OFEC for me anymore and the coins are sitting in flips in intercpet boxes, so no good display.

My medals are in two wall cabinets my step-father made for me. I have the best ones (that fit) in airtights, but there haven't been any toning issues yet for the naked medals.

I have bought used US generic albums made by various makers for Nickels through Dollars and I had even added blank pages to those albums were additional pages can be added.

It works... it is not hard to do and it is not expensive

I've tried your 3rd option and it worked well except when there's a large difference in size, one page for small coins and another for large ones. Then I learned about the Eagle brand album. You can purchase the exact size holder for the coin or coins and place them in the pages in any order you wish.

I never took it to the next level, typical of my race and age. Procrastination. But it really shouldn't be complicated, I guess it would take a phone call or two and a precise design or list of the pages and binders we ask. Lettering is secondary to me.

Another way to resolve this would be loose-leave Intercept pages that could go into any three-ring binder.
