1813 Capped Bust Half 50/UNI....Grade revealed - scroll down!!

First of all, this is not my coin. It is owned by another collector and I have heard that he is interested in selling it. I also happen to need it for my Redbook set I am putting together.

I was wondering what some of the board members here thought of it, in terms of strike, surface quality, toning, and luster (which is not well seen in the pics according to the owner), and of course, if you wish to guess the PCGS grade, go right ahead.

Finally, how tough is it to find a nice looking 1813 50/UNI O-101?

Looks pretty nice, I love the crust. I call it a solid 45 with claims to a 50.

Just to give people here some clue as to the grade, the luster is NOT AT ALL well seen in these pics.

Looks like it might be a lot more colorful in the right light. I like it at 53 from the pictures and your description... it just looks too rubbed for 55 from others I have seen. But it sure seems like we are missing a lot of color from the images posted.

My first blush was PCGS 45 but with claim to 50. So I agree with those before me.

Looks like a nice 45 but if the luster is all there as stated then it is probably in an AU slab.

I'd call this a very low end AU-50, but well above an EF-45. So, I'm at about 48.5.

It is a very early die state, look at those stars. My guess is PCGS gave it XF45, not AU. Pretty coin.

To clear things up here, the grade on this 1813 0-101 believe or not is PCGS AU55.

Like I said, the luster is NOT AT ALL seen and I guess the pics don't do this coin justice as PCGS felt it was a choice AU CBH.

It also happens to be in a newer style PCGS holder which in my opinion was likely graded pretty recently and also somewhat strictly by today's PCGS standards.

I don't collect the series but this coin is beautiful to me. Very nice eye appeal for the grade... I was going to say 45 because I think the flatness on Libertys' head and bow is wear... but given the hidden luster in the devices I might be able to see this in 53 plastic... but not for 53 money...

While I was in the 45 - 50 range, 55 could be the better opinion depending what it looks like it hand. From the image, it looks to be a keeper

Note to self....... pay a nominal fee to get all older pcgs slabs in new pcgs slabs with the thinking above.

I don't think it's a 55. For 55 and 58, I think I have to think it's unc at first sight and that clearly isn't. Of course I still think there are quite a few 58's in 63 slabs. Call me old fashioned.

Generally I agree with this statement. And to add, I've seen a couple "MS-64's and MS-65's" which I would have thought were AU-58's.

Sorry, but even though the luster may be strong, that Busties in definitely not what PCGS normally would call AU55. I still think it is a stretch to AU50. If the seller wants near AU55 money, I would definitely pass.

Here is my ANACS 50 for comparison.

Here's an NGC AU50 that everyone thought was a 40-45... It's very easy to misgrade these early CBH's

Let's remember that the Bust series grading standards at NGC are more liberal than PCGS.

Mozin's ANACS 50 is a beaut. Obviously a later die state than OP's. This probably won't come as a surprise (I know I have optimistic tendencies), but I would keep an open mind on OP's coin due to the limitations of grading from an image. I think an abundance of flashy luster not seen in the images should be worth a couple points. Still surprised at the 55 but hey, I'd like her best in the raw!

Dang. Missed this thread. 'Course I didn't have this coin yet. I really like the first coin, but as a 55? Hmm. This is an NGC 45 (101A) that was Mike King's. It appears to have noticeably less wear than the PCGS coin. Note the characteristic differences from the other two coins.

And I have seen Mozin's many a time B4.
