Byzantine gold – sources 9th century

During the reigns of Michael II, Theophilus and Michael III (/Theodora) the eastern Roman Empire seemed to have acquired some new, unknown source of gold. Theories of “new mines” are never specific enough or supported by suitable references.

Have any new theories been presented on this?

  • It was about that time that gold from the mines of central Africa began to first show up around the Mediterranean.

is it only coincidence that Doug brings forth his vast amount of knowledge when an obscure gold coin query is brought forth?
