Not intentionally done so it's not AT, but not done naturally so it's not NT. I would say it would be environmental damage.

I tend to classify coins as AT or NT based upon intent. In this case, although I lean towards unintentional (NT) but it's tough to be sure -- so I'd classify it as QT (questionable toning).

However, I also recognize that others define NT and AT (and QT) differently, so YMMV.

Regardless of the label, the a coin like this with toning like this carries little to no premium -- you can make as many as you want in your own washing machine....Mike

I agree that the obverse looks this way, but the ones I've see (that is, left in my pockets and washed!) are two sided toners, this appears to be toned only on one side. Perhaps it laid on a window sill or dashboard for a time?

The detergent seems to affect areas that have toned brown more than areas of full red. Simmilar to MS70. My guess is, that this cent had more brown areas on the obverse and therefor shows more of the bluish toning.

Thanks for your input guys. I was just surprised to get this from a change when i bought the paper this morning and never saw one colored like this in circulation before. Usually i see them slabbed in the BST or the Bay. So i was just wondering what caused it to color this way. I learn a lot from all of you and for that...Many Thanks!
