Grading opinions please, 1938 d buffalo nickel

I think it's a high grade, and a real pretty coin! I know there is bags and bags of these, but maybe this one is just a little bit nicer?

The activity around the mouth area troubles me.

If it's due to a planchet flaw - that's one thing but if it's something else, PCGS might balk at grading it.

Shame too cause otherwise it's nice.

I think everything you see on and around the Indians face is from the die. It's detail I'm pretty sure

As common as toned 1938-D Buffalos are, I happen to like this one a lot.

As we all know, it's literally impossible to grade coins from a picture with any degree of accuracy however,
as far as I can tell it appears to be a very nice coin with perhaps some sort of planchet flaw.

Hard to say what the guys would grade it or if they even would.

Only one way to find out! Give it a shot.

What your are seeing on the obverse is caused by a worn erroded die, it is not a planchet flaw. This is very common on Buffalo's and is how the coin was struck. It will not keep it from grading.

I would imagine you are looking at a coin that would go MS65+/- and the obverse looks to have been struck from a severely eroded die.

I like the toning but not the weak strike. This would probably grade fairly high but I would not be interested. If you like it though that is all that matters.

I do not see a grade above 65. This date is available in some amazing grades with equally amazing eye appeal
