Need advice: C, D, and CC Half Eagles

I would like to start a set of Half Eagles types; one from each of the C, D, and CC mints. Any advice on optimal grade or years? Again looking for nice type pieces, not rare dates

For the CC, the 1891-CC $5 is by far the most available and least expensive. A nice AU-58 will not set you back much.

The C and D $5's are more scarce and expensive. Except for a handful of better dates, they are priced in a tight range in XF-45, and that's the grade I recommend. Make sure you buy an original one, not one that has been dipped or scrubbed.

xf45 for C and D probably represents the best meat on the coin for
the money.

Check brokencc.com they usually have a few.

Around xf is good detail and some character. Sometimes the lower grade stuff is more interesting to look at than the generic looking coins.

I agree with RYK.

Go for an AU58 CC, and an XF40 or XF45 C and D.

Also, avoid the "weak C" $5's. They have a terribly shallow mintmark which is not very satisfying. They're cheaper, but less exciting.
