Jefferson Error Specialists, Have any Info on a 1981 D Double/Triple Die Reverse?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew where or if this variety is listed anywhere? or where to get it listed?

My apologies for the blurry pics, I shot them through a small loop.

All of USA is at least Doubled some areas it looks Tripled!

Serifs are split, Not Strike Doubling...

Five Cents is spread with the last TS Doubled.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

    There are two listed here.

Since you have the coin, perhaps you could verify which one it might be.

If the descriptions do not match either of the two presented, you can always send it to CONECA for attribution. Just follow the links from the CONECA main page.

I'm pretty sure that's a known variety, as there is a major DDR for 1981-D listed by CONECA as 1-R-II. I don't know the markers well enough to know if your coin is it. By any chance was your coin found in a Mint set? I do know that the 1-R-II DDR can be found there.

Whatever it's called, that is a sweet DDR, good for you for noticing it. A lot of people just search for the major published varieties and would not have given the reverse of a 1981-D nickel a second glance.

    TCT,
Very nice find! I'm not one that looks at 1981-D's, but I know I will from now on. That one is really nicely doubled or trippled?
    Thanks for the pictures.

I think this may be the 1981-D DDR. You can click on Lee's link above to see additional
information on the two varieties. Note the die scratch (Southeast) through the UN in UNITED,
the choice of die marker for the first 1-R-II-C+VI variety. The doubling of the letters can be
noted in most of the letters but my pictures are of low quality and don't show the doubling
for every letter. The OP's coin does not show this die crack but may be consistent to the 2nd
variety 2-R-II-C+VI shown for this date.

I would also like to note that I'm not an expert in this field in the sense that I can say what is minor
or major spreading of the letters. So I won't give that opinion other than to give credit where it is
due to the founders of those varieties that the doubling in E PLUISBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES oF
AMERICA are distinguishable and noteworthy for a very collectable variety for coin collectors.
