Took our 3 kids to meet former OSU QB Craig Krenzel tonite. Updated with a TTM of the photo!

Menards had him at their grand opening from 6-8.

We got there about 5:45 and got into quite a large line. We didn't get up to him until nearly 7:20 and when we walked out the line was as long as it was at 6pm.

We got up there and he signed an OSU mini helmet and a card for my boy, a couple of cards for my one girl, and I had a couple for the other girl (who was acting pretty crabby). I told Craig that the jersey my boy was wearing was one that I bought him when he was playing. I pointed out that it was the crab's birthday and he proceeded to talk to her briefly. He then tells me "Hey I got half a smile out of her" and laughed. I asked if I could get a quick pic of my son with him since my son is a bit shy about asking and he and some guy (presumably a very small security guy) both say "Sure". I snapped the pic and we both thanked him.

He seemed very gracious and appeared to be taking his time with everyone which would explain why the line was moving so slow. I wonder what time it finally ended!

From all accounts I've heard (no first hand knowledge) Mr. Krenzel is a first class person.

Forgot to mention that I had a little stack of his cards with me. Our one girl was being a butthead and didn't want to get anything signed so I had one extra. I gave it to the older guy that was in line behind us that we had been BS'ing with for the entire time since he had only 1 item with him. He acted like a kid when I gave it to him. image

That's a great pic of your son with Craig. You should go for a ttm in it! Either way, great story!

Exactly what we are going to do! I've also got one of him with AJ Hawk that we may try also!

Goose you got a great looking boy there! Great idea about AJ Hawk, question here- any idea what Andy Katzemoyer is up to? Since his Patriots career ended due to his injury I never heard of him again.

I haven't heard a thing about him either since that time.

He was sure hyped up a lot while even still playing for OSU.

What address should I use for them, esp. Krenzel? Sportscollectors is not a big help on him.

It looks like AJ's stuff can be sent in c/o the Packers.

Great picture! Interesting Krenzel stat I just discovered - he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated 3 times (in one year no less) - which is a lot for a college athlete. A great idea for a Krenzel autograph would be the 1/13/03 issue following the national championship game. Sounds like he stayed local so maybe next time. You can order a reprint of the cover on the SI website (http://www.sicovers.com/Product.aspx?pid=686)

The one thing I remember about Krenzel is that every game the announcers would talk about his degree (molecular genetics or something along those lines) and how smart he was. When you watch a lot of games you hear a lot of the same stuff (provided by the school in the press guide or PR release) over and over and over. It's worse with basketball as there are more games.

Go Bucks; although my all time favorite QB of theirs was Corneilius Green

If he's still local (and it sounds like he is), you might try sending it to the OSU athletic department. I bet they forward stuff to former students all the time...

Krenzel attended high school at the same school where I student taught, though he came a few years after I was done. He's a frigging traitor to his home state, I tell ya*. And a first-class guy, too.

I also did some teaching at the same high school as Derek Jeter attended - when he was actually there.

I went to the same high school as Jeter although a few years earlier.

Awesome!! What a story... Go Bucks!! image
  • What a refeshing antidote.

I don't follow college football, but this guy seems to me what makes it great - personality, pleasantness and a smile.

    well done.
  • Very cool, I wish all athletes would act more like Craig!
