US Mint Return Delays - Returns Posted *Finally !*

Finally, All (3) of my US Registered Mail Packages sent back to Memphis on 12/29/08 (1) and 01/02/09 (2) have been officially acknowledged today and yesterday. It’s only been about 6-7 weeks since they were signed for in Memphis and then magically transported to Plainfield, Indiana by Pitney-Bowes Government Services Mule-Train.

Considering it was nearly $26K in Gold I was certainly pissed-off at the morons who thought this logistical nightmare up.

I hope this info helps anyone else stuck in this US Mint Limbo Situation.

BTW, here is my Wish List for 2009:

1.) Sure would be nice if they fix the Order History Feature on the US Mint Website. You know, the "easy way to track your order's progress, whether it's still in process, in the hands of the shipper, or at your doorstep. "

2.) Sure would be nice if they fix the ‘shipping the coin you bought Feature’ . You know, the "You buy Coin(s) and they ship it to you (and get a signature)"

3.) Sure would be nice if the US Mint had some *real* Eagles listed on the Production Schedule with the Hags and Crap they have now. Maybe even a Gold Buffalo, too. You know, the Proof American Eagles struck in Platinum, Gold and Silver Bullion, like they must make and sell to us ‘sheepeople’ as mandated by US Federal Law.

4.) Sure would be nice now if we had another American Revolution (bloodless preferred, but whatever it takes) You know, like the one were we dispose of the imperial powers, and follow the Constitution. Heck, we don’t even need to write a new one.

5.) At least we can still buy and hoard Ammo for now.

They are probably sitting on the loading docks in Memphis because nobody is there. That is they would be if PBGS had anything to do with them.

I haven't had to return anything in a while, so I can't help much. I think it takes a min of two weeks for them to get entered into the system. Give the mint a call, ask to speak to someone in the warehouse. Then see if they have processed your return. Then ask to speak with a senior rep and have them release the refund. You probably know that dance already but for those that don't...
  • Thanks, Jesse, I am in fact doing the dance with the Mint. They say 'they are gathering them all together to send to Indiana'.

All supervisors were in a staff meeting trying to prepare for tomorrow's 'big day'.

My two returns (4 coin gold sets) went into the mail to PBGS. Probably been sitting on their doorstep for a couple of days.

I called the mint yesterday. Even though the return address on the packing slip says to ship the coins to TN, all that's happening there is they are put on a truck and sent to Indiana. i was told it will take 7-10 business days for returns to be acknowledged after they get delivered to TN.

I for one, am not holding my breath.
  • Lloyd, its been 13 Business Days, but hearing its happening to others provides some comfort. Thanks for posting!

I, too, called the Mint about a coin I returned on 12/24 and was received 12/30. The person said to give them another 10 days or so, but no hard information backed up this statement. I have heard that Obama is going to make Mint returns a top priority, however. image

My return was signed for in Memphis on 12/30.As of last week the mint had no idea were my coins were.I made it to the 2nd level of customer service and when I pressed to talk to a supervisor I was told they were all busy and i would get a return call-that was over a week ago,no call.I was told that they had about a two-three week backlog on processing returns they had already recieved.I was also told that although my return was signed for in Memphis my exchange would not be processed until the returned coins were processed in Indiana. The "2nd level" rep could not tell me how the coins were moved from Memphis to Indiana or when they would arrive. She also could not tell me why my coin was not logged into their system when it had been signed for in Memphis.I was also told that it would take 4-6 weeks to process my exchange once it showed up in Ind. So I will be somewhat surprised if I ever see my 888 set-even though I was told not to worry as they hold back 10% of the mintage to cover exchanges.....On the positive side maybe I'll get that unc 1 oz Buffalo that has been on rolling backorder since 12-5...

  • Wow, drfish that gives one pause! I sent back around $25K in Gold that is now in the black-hole of the US Mint.

On the other-hand, imagine snooping around and looking for that Semi Trailer being loaded daily for Indiana.

I 'm sure its not hooked up to a Tractor yet.....

Now I know why my 4-Coin Proof Plat on hold will probably make it to me in a Month or so.

You know, he just signed a thing today to make a FOIA request a heck of a lot easier!

How about "US Mint, please tell us the exact mintage of Platinum Proof and Gold Proof Coins for every year thru 2008"
  • Update - still no acknowledgement from US Mint of Returns.

I am going to alert CoinWorld

They admit a huge clusterf**k is underway and nothing will be given a 'returned status' for 6-8 weeks.

I'm glad that the transition to the new contractor is going so well: coins left on the doorstep, poorly packaged and weeks just to have retruns posted to your account so that you can then wait the "normal" five weeks for the refunds to post.

  • Per the suggestion of an esteemed Board member, I have filed charge-backs with my Credit Cards against the US Mint for the returns I have sent to them over a month ago.

The products were returned by following the US Mint procedures. (3) Packages were sent by US Registered Mail, Fully Insured with Delivery Confirmation. (2) Packages were sent the same day, 01/02/2009, (1) package sent on 12/29/2008.

    Enough is enough!

I have called the Mint (3) Times and each time I was assured my returns were safe but that due to the move of the US Mint Fulfillment Facility from Memphis, Tennessee to Plainfield, Indiana, they stated that all processing of returns sent to Memphis, TN would take at least 6-8 Weeks from the Day they are received. That is as specific as they will get.

Using typical US Mint windage to figure that means return processing is going to be doubled to 12-16 weeks.

It is unacceptable for them NOT to acknowledge even the receipt of anyone's high-value returns all mailed by (3) separate US Registered Mail Packages! I have proof of delivery for all (3) separate US Registered Mail Packages and the (3) US Postal Service generated Proof of Deliveries.

The mint’s contractors might be busy shipping out orders to non-speculators. They will eventually get to your material.

If you sent items back more than 60-days after the original charge, your credit card company might not honor your demand. At the least, they will initiate an investigation with the mint contractor/card processor.

That's funny, how can they tell a speculator from a non-speculator? Is it the fact that I bought about $75K in bullion that I kept?

Thank goodness with the Platinum Card I have its 120 Days and I am only at Day 50. The Card Company has already given me a temporary credit, pending receipt of my exceptionally documented Paper work.

Geez, may I throw negative energy to you? Is that OK? As you have no problem throwing yours to me?

    $26k in gold?
    They weren't "70s"?
Gold price went down in 30 days?
    Mintage values were adjusted upwards?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Yup, I could have walked the hoard to Plainfield and sold coinage to B&M's along the way like Johnny Appleseed.

Then upon arrival, said nevermind, and bought both a snowmachine and a young, blond cheerleader for the ride back.
  • Rent, never buy. Maitenance and upkeep is a pain on either one of them.

You talkin' about the gold coins or about the "young, blond cheerleader"?
(Please stay my hero and tell me it is the latter.....)

Maybe there are multiple "morons" involved?

I called the US Mint today about a return that I sent in early January. This was the fifth followup that I made and the service rep said that they finally had record that they had received it but would take 4-6 weeks to process. Also, she said that they had a 36 page listing of returns that still had to be processed.

  • This is ridiculous - I can return a pair of shoes to any of a half dozen online shoe sellers and get acknowledgement of return within a week and a refund posted to my credit card in two weeks.

If they can do this, so could the Mint.

Of course, nothing tops the idiocy of leaving thousands of dollars in gold dropped on people's doorsteps without so much as a by-your-leave . . .

With gold hitting $1k don't you wish you had held on a few more weeks?

  • << <i>....I was certainly pissed-off at the morons who thought this logistical nightmare up. Maybe there are multiple "morons" involved? >>

I made a killing on my purchases, kept a bunch, sold a ton and returned a few. But you know what? With me, no bail-out was needed, no government help at all other than asking them to do the frigg'n job of accepting returns.

The only moron I know that is here, is you. You are a jealous one at that.

    What is wrong with you?

  • << <i>With gold hitting $1k don't you wish you had held on a few more weeks? >>

No, as it started to go up, again, I bought more at the same price, before they raised prices.

The point of the thread was to record what the Mint is doing to EVERYONE on returns, collectors like me, speculators like me, and morons like RWB, as well.
