A Sad day in C-Town: Dante Lavelli died tonight

I feel like the grim reaper. Just the other day, someone posted that they wanted to buy cards to get his autograph.....I replied that they better hurry because I met him this summer and he was in pretty bad shape....and tonight I hear the bad news of his death.


First baugh and now Lavelli...talk about a bummer couple weeks. Lavelli was a true class act...very pleasant signer, personable, friendly....What struck me the most was the size of his hands when I shook it...no wonder he caught everything thrown to him.

    Very sad... I just got a '50 Bowman back a few weeks ago. A true great and a gentleman. He'll be missed!

    Very sad news. I'll have to call my grandfather in the morning and see if he caught it. My grandfather will be 90 in a couple of weeks and lived in Cleveland til 58 and is still a Browns fan.

    May he rest in peace.

    Sad news. I was fortunate enough to meet him several times, and he always gave a big smile when someone addressed him as "Glue". The man had so many stories, you could sit all day and listen to him.

    Wow - RIP. I just got a rookie signed several weeks ago and had a package ready to mail out in the next day or two (4 or 5 cards).

    Dante was 85 and like so many of you have said he was a class act. I also had the opportunity to meet him several times since I live near Cleveland and he was always sociable, willing to talk and open to the public. I remember one show several years ago when he, Lou Groza and Otto Graham all attended. If my memory is correct it was at the Kingsville Mall in Ohio....One of the best shows I ever went to, all three talked to the attendees, shared stories and even had pictures taken if desired. I'll have to pull out my pictures from that show and post them...it will give me a better idea of when it occured since my kids are in the photos. RIP Dante, Lou and Otto, we'll miss you in Brownstown.image

    Ironic, I have a signed Buckeye mini helmet by him and glanced at it yesterday thinking how cool it was. (He signed it "Gluefingers" and "1942 Nat'l Champs"). Then I heard the news. RIP.
