Is anyone buying Topps Mayo Football

I just saw this product. It looks like kind of a football version of Allen & Ginter. I ordered a box from a local dealer today.

Blowout's posted checklist

I really dig the auto/relic list.

The dealer I spoke with, said it will be in on 01/28/2009. He has a very limited supply at $88/box.

    Very nice looking cards.

    I don't understand this though:

"16 prominent personalities, such as Colin Powell, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Al Franken appear with a relic piece on framed mini cards"

Al Franken? He's up there with Powell and Vanderbilt? I'd throw that one in the trash if I got it.

It is a great looking set, I might get a box or 2 if I can get a deal. I just don't understand what William Shatner has to do with vintage football sets.

The powers that be at Topps decided on including a Tommy Tubberville auto but not a Nick Saban. Words cannot express my anger at this point in time. By the way, as an Alabama fan I am contractionaly obliged to despise anything that remotely resembles Auburn.

Nice looking product, I have been looking for a modern heritage type football set to come out and this looks pretty good.

I been hoping that they would start a run with football like they do with the baseball.

ive read that some one opened around 4-5 boxes of Mayo and felt ripped off bc not one box had a signature. So, I'm thinking that the 2 relic card per box ratio is higher than the One signature and one relic card per box. if you get a signature card...you have the lucky box.

my point of view, I rather get Topps Heritage.
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
yeah but there isn't a FB heritage to get. This is more like Allen & Ginter for football.

yeah a job is nice to make money on, but this stuff is 90-100 a box. 2 relics for that price is not acceptable, even if it is a nice looking product.

That may off changes my mind about buying any them.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
I know its nice to sit and rip product but there is a fine line between collecting for fun and collecting for profit. 90 dollars is a lot of money in my house. I need
to get an auto or two for that price. If something is 60 bucks a box, then Im not as picky. Topps puts out 60 dollar boxes with one auto in them per box all
the time, you have to wonder why they think they can do otherwise with other products.

I like heritage, and I am blind to its value, I have always said that if I didnt' collect heritage, I would never buy an of it...its just not worth the money profit
wise..there are perks to boxes if you can keep price down when you buy them. We all know that the SP and chromes move easily. Some of the higher
end GU sell for crazy amounts and the autos, or at least the higher end ones, are always good.

If Mayo takes off and everyone does the set and there are a bunch of SP's, then this might become a better bet, but in football there are MANY MANY scrubs. It would
of been nice to get in in every box. I also am a bit offended that topps can still run the (one GU and one Auto OR 2 GU) promise. It appears by other people rips
that the former is much rarer than the later.

Im hoping that 09 heritage is more like 08 Heritage Update as far as value is concerned....that is how to do a product. I also noticed that blowout is sold out of
heritage update..hmmmm...looks like I wasn't the only one who saw value in these boxes.

Good Luck to all that are ripping, Im going to track down some pics of these and see what they look like

I think singles and autos will sell pretty cheap due to the "new" nature of the set. Might be best to cherry pick some off the bay until pricing goes up. Also if the boxes don't yield at least one auto per box (come on Chrome does) then I won't buy until they are on discount.

I picked up two boxes of this crap today. The dealer said that the guy who bought the other 14 boxes opened them all in the store. He pulled NOTHING. I got a Funkmaster Flex relic and a Rich Eisen auto. Whipteefrickendoo. I'll post scans ASAP. For now, here is a pic of the Porsche I pre-ordered from Topps.

Just ripped one tonight. Nothing too exciting. Rashard Mendehall and James Hardy Relics. Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, and Joe Flacco, and Jonathan Stewart for rookies. A couple of mini-boats. No autos.

What are the short prints for this set?

Does anyone else think these will be a condition sensitive issue with the black borders and backs?

I like how they look, but the boxes are a little to expensive.
I may try to put together a mini set at some point, but going the box route doesn't seem to be worth it.

Who at Topps that that it would be a good idea to put in "Funk Master Flex"? And if an auto wasn't enough, they put in a Relic too.

    Ripped my first box.
The cards look great and have a nice feel to them.

There's a Super Bowl helmet card in every pack which is just a filler.
Also, there's a little tiny parallel card in every pack which is kind of cool.

Not many, but every once in a while you get a non-football guy, or a retired player.
Aikman looks cool, and I think that's David Crosby top middle :

    image

That Kellogg guy was the original no fun dude :

    image

I know the guys wanting to find glasses bigger need ink,
but the relic cards are actually quite awesome when you hold them in your hand.
They're like a little framed photos with glass on both sides. Never seen anything like them!

    image

If you're looking for that elusive pot of gold in a pack of cards,
you're likely better off looking elsewhere, but to me this issue rocks and is a lot of fun ... image

I am not sure whether or not this post will put me into the category of jock sniffer that was mentioned earlier in the thread, but here is the story.

I still needed some singles to finish my set, so I picked up two blasters at Walmart today. On the third pack in, I pulled this.
