Any good coin shops in Philly?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,382 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'll be free for a chunk of Friday (if my brother doesn't take me up on my offer to run some errands for him) and was wondering if anyone knows of any good shops to visit. I've already been to that big one that only sells modern crap image

Just keep jumping in a cab saying take me to the coin shop and see where it takes you.

I live here in Philly, but don't know of any in the immediate Center City area. There used to be one at 1804 Chestnut Street, but they moved out last year to Collingswood, NJ, across the river. Don't know their new address, though.

I live in Philly too, and let me tell you, the pickings are sparse.

There's Edelman's on Old York Rd in Jenkintown. There's none that I know of within the city...
a few are out in the 'burbs along the Main Line like Delaware Valley Rare Coins.

Do a search, there's been a handful of threads about Philly coin shops in the last year or so with more information.

Let us know if you are able to make any of them and what you find image

Two coin dealers come to my mind in the Philadelphia area, although I am not from that area, and must defer to those who are. Of course, the first is Catherine Bullowa:

    Catherine Bullowa
    Coin Hunter
    1616 Walnut Street
    Philadelphia, PA 19103
    (215) 735-5517

I do not know if Catherine has a store front, so you might want to contact her first and arrange for an appointment, but she always has a nice assortment of quality coins at shows.

The other Philadelphia area dealer with whom I have enjoyed doing business for many years I am almost certain does not have a store front, but he generally has a nice inventory of circulated and raw material for the variety collector:

    John Bachman
    Bach's Coin Box
    P. O. Box 117
    Bridgeport, PA
    (610) 292-9218

I live in the Philly suburbs, and a LOT of B&M coin stores around here have disappeared over the years!!image

I believe there might still be one in Lansdowne, PA as well, but not sure. Otherwise, the ones remaining are more like coin investment locations (such as one in Broomall/Marple Twp. on Rt 3 not too far NW of the Blue Route exit), which put them out of my "circle of friends"............

There is one more combination old/oddities & coin shop left near the R5 train station on "Main Street" in Lansdale (?) area as well ("Hen's Coins"), which is one of the last of the old-timers that might make for interesting searching, too. I've been there before looking thru junk boxes & for old Whitman folders at 50cents each, but he has a LOT behind the counter & in display cases that you might find something from.

If anyone goes to Hen's, let me know what they think of the place.

Why did they disappear? The taxes in the city is a killer. I use to work with the guys at Philly S&C, Richard & Bobby. Good people.

As a life-long Philadelphian, I regret to say that there are not many B&M shops in Philly any longer. There was Center City Coin and Stamp at 18th and Market, but they recently moved to NJ. Catherine Bullowa supposedly has operations in the city but I personally have never been able to locate her storefront.

There is JP's coin shop on Torresdale Ave (Northeast section of the city) - typical B&M shop with the occasional diamond in the raw found if your timing is fortuitious. Owner is a nice guy.

There is also a very decent B&M on Street Road (Collectibles One and slightly outside of city limits; 20 - 25 minute car ride from CC). Has some nice raw morgans, seated, etc.

That is all I know. Good luck!image

Thanks to all for the suggestions thus far. I'm not sure if I'll have a car, but I'll see what I can do to get out of the city.

That's where I used to buy coins in the 60's.

A BIG day would be like 4 coins for $10!
