wax pack versus wax tray versus rack pack

On BBCE

1978 topps Baseball wax pack = $17

1978 topps Baseball Rack Pack = $50

1978 topps Baseball Wax Tray = $100

Am I wrong here in thinking that a wax tray is just 3 wax packs packaged together, and if so, why the high premium for a wax tray.
Would it be better to buy 2 rack packs at that price?
Are you paying extra for the additional packaging which would help deter any re-packaging?
And finally, why did I waste my 131st post on a thread that is not call 'Group Sub'?
And second finally Jim Rice and not Dale Murphy? I'm not happy with the baseball writers!
And third finally, well there is no third finally so I will return to my work on my desk before my boss asks me what my third finally is

The trays are more than 3xs an individual wax pack because of their scarcity. Many of the trays from the 60s, IF YOU CAN FIND THEM, will demand more than double the price of the packs in the tray. Trays would be purchased to save, NOT to open.

With wax trays, you are paying for rarity.

  • Doug is correct. The wax trays are equal to 3 wax packs if you are just busting them open. The wax trays cost more becaue of scarcity and the extra value is for them sealed. So if you are planning on buying a wax tray to bust, that would be stupid. Just buy 3 packs for about half the price.

Well that rules me out of the wax tray business. I do not have the self control to own anything that is un-opened. Charlie Sheen has more self control than I do, and probably a better baseball card collection. But I do have the possibilty of a true 1 of 1 in the near future. I best be quiet now because I'm on the verge of losing five bucks, which now can buy a footlong!

Wax traysd prior to 1979 are very tough to find, so the premium is definitely due to their scarcity...the earlier the tray the bigger the premium...Steve Hart had a 1972 wax tray that he was asking $1K for...the last year for baseball wax trays is 1980.

  • Grote15 hit it dead on. Baseball wax trays prior to '79 are very tough to find. '79 trays relative to '78s are much more common and sell for $25 to $35 on ebay. Steve Hart's '72 tray has some damage to the packaging which diminishes its eye appeal and value. Two years ago a mint '72 wax tray appeared on ebay and sold for $1500. I had never seen a '72 tray at the time it first appeared on ebay and I immediately called Steve Hart and asked what he thought the retail value was. He said $1500 and lo and behold the tray sold to the highest bidder at $1515 six days later. Steve Hart REALLY knows vintage material!!!
