Fast but brutal Jan. special poppage

While I'm quite amazed at the turn around time, some of these grades really have me blown away. If they make it back to me before the end of the month I'll definitely be cracking and resubmitting a few.

<< <i>I didn't really have high hopes as these were all perforated, but I honestly thought I would end up with about 8-8s, 6-9s, and 2-10s >>
I hope they aren't getting strict on perforated cards. I am about to send in some minty fresh 1981 Kelloggs cards that are perforated that I had to gently separate.

If you didn't pull off any of the card's surface, you should be fine.

Ditto on the '83 stickers. In fact, these two issues, along with the '82 Fleer stamps, are the three issues that I'm apparently incapable of pre-grading. So if it's any consolation you at least have some company when it comes to getting lousy grades on these cards.
<< <i>If you didn't pull off any of the card's surface, you should be fine. >>
The Kelloggs are like 2 cards in one. The 3-D surface is glued on to the cardboard. Impossible to separate them without having a piece of a corner or two missing on the cardboard.

FWIW I think grading '91 Kelloggs is a losing proposition. Hopefully your results are different from mine, but IMExperience these invariably get slotted in a PSA 9 or PSA 8 holder, and that's the end of it. It's a deceptively difficult issue to get into a PSA 10 holder, although they always look like they have a shot after you separate them.

<< <i>That is some consolation, I had some nice big scans of 8s, 9s, and 10s to compare them with but evidently that wasn't enough. >>
If there's one thing I've learned it's that you can't be too hard on yourself when you get the grades back on these oddball issues. If you submit a bunch of '82 Topps, for instance, at it comes back with 6% 10's, then obviously there's a problem in the pre-grading. But with the oddball issues you just never know. This goes double for perforated cards and hand-cuts; since PSA doesn't see a lot of these you're really at the mercy of the whim of the grader. I send in 1000's of oddball cards annually, and I'm always still surprised at some of the grades that emerge.

I hope I'm not making the same mistake with teh 81 Kelloggs using PSA 10 scans from eBay. Mine look just as clean and they all came from sealed factory sets.

One thing to consider is that if all one had to do to get 10's from this set was to buy factory sets and cleanly separate them then 4SC, or some other bulk submitter, probably would have run up the pops a long time ago. But, who knows? Maybe you'll get a kind grader.
<< <i>But, who knows? Maybe you'll get a kind grader. >>
That's what I am always hoping for. My fear with grading is that I will only send in a few and get great grades and be mad because I didn't send them all. On the other hand, I am scared to send them all and get the nitpicky grader that is having a bad day and gives me all 5's and 6's.

Well, if you manage to score a bunch of 10's from this set you'll probably hit the jackpot, because these cards don't show up all that often in PSA 10 holders. On the downside, I think 9's usually sell for the grading fee.

.
Exactly. The higher pop PSA 10 HOF'ers and low pop PSA 10 commons sell in the $50-75 range. PSA 9's sell for about $3-5.

FWIW you can probably do much better with the HOFers than $50-$75 if you're willing to park them in your store for a while. Especially any of the higher profile HOFers. I wouldn't let a pop 3 of a top-tier HOF go for any less than $125, and you'll get that price eventually if you're patient. If you just run them for seven days and take whatever you can, though, the results could be much worse.
