Coin counter on ancient denarius. I've never seen this before.

"Liberalitas standing l. holding coin counter and cornucopia"

From this HJB listing for a denarius of Severus Alexander

What kind of device is this coin counter?

Are you sure that's not an ancient fly swatter? image

It's a form of abacus, which it is more usually called in the catalogues. I'm not sure if it would be a generic Roman abacus or a device specifically made for counting and reckoning coins. Liberalitas (Generosity) is often shown holding one.
