Postage Due Question

Ok, this is a new one for me. I've never seen this happen before.

I received a bubble mailer today with some cards I won on Ebay. The seller had printed postage at home, it appears. He sent it via first class mail, saying it weighs 2.10 oz (I dont have a scale at home to weigh it, but it's a bubble mailer with five Topps Heritage Clubhouse relic cards.). It appears the envelope was sent for $1.17 from Memphis to Chicago. On the white sticky label, someone has written in ink, by hand and in cursive, "Postage Due". However, there is no amount shown.

I honestly almost threw the envelope out before I even saw the note.

What should I do? If this was real, wouldn't they show me on the envelope how much postage is due? Is it expected that I go to the post office with this envelope to ask someone there how much is due? If I don't investigate, will they hold my other mail or something crazy?

Any advice is appreciated.

  • 1st if no $ for postage due not your fault.
2nd if postage was due check and see if a little brown envelope was left in your mailbox with the amount.
3rd post office won't hold your mail on a mistake

maybe sticker came off another piece of mail??? not yours.

if item weighed 2.1 oz $1.17 seems to be the right price.

    Hi Brian,

Sometimes, a seller's scale might be off by .1 oz, thus the correct weight of the package is wrong when the label is created.

Then, the package is dropped off at the post office, the post office scans it in and notices that the weight is off, and the clerk makes a note that additional postage is due.

Personally, I'm surprised that they didn't return the envelope to the seller in the first place.

But maybe your postal carrier is expecting you to put the amout due in an envelope so he can take it to the post office.

The post office won't hold your mail or anything like that.

I wouldn't worry about it. You might want to notify the seller; possibly send him a scan of the envelope.

Just FYI: a package weighing 2.1 oz is actually 3 oz by USPS standards and the cost for 1st class is $1.51 w/o DC, or $1.69 w/DC.
