Mark Sanchez leaving early for the NFL - Pete Carroll not happy

That was a very unpleasant and ackward news conference, on the part of Carroll that is.

Comments

  • There are 2 guys better than Sanchez sitting on the bench, you'd think he would be happy?
    Am I speaking Chinese?

I watched the press conference and listened to Pete Carroll on our local sports show yesterday afternoon.

Some fans feel that it was a ploy for Pete to scare Sanchez into changing his mind. Well I'm a UCLA fan but I think very highly of Carroll and he has NEVER made a statement in regards to a player going against his judgement or against the grain, and I believe what Pete said. I also believe Pete Carroll really gets his players ready for the NFL and always wants them to make the best decision.

In his conversations and press conference, Pete basically said that Sanchez went against he recommendations, but he understands it's a dream and a great opportunity to play in the NFL and wishes he and his family the best in his success. He stated that he wanted to make sure Sanchez was able to make a smart decision and that they would discuss everything Sanchez would need to know to make a smart decision.

Good points from our local LA sports hosts....Matt Leinart decided to stay at USC for his senior season after a season like Sanchez had and he was projected to go as a first pick in the draft.. By staying in his senior season Leinart's stock actually fell down and he went later in the draft the next year and didn't get anywhere near the signing bonus and salary he was have commanded if he went in the year before. They also said what difference does it make going in early.....He will get his money now and play one day when he's ready.

So much so that he barely acknowledged Sanchez while making a quick exit from the room after the press conference. Actions speak louder than words.

cry baby, Carroll wishes he could go to the NFL and win....not

  • If Carroll wanted the best for his player he would want him to enter the NFL now. Nobody knows when a career ending injury may happen and after this draft rookie salary regulations fall into place, which could limit what the team that gets him can/will pay him.

I totally understand where that comment comes from and believe me, I'm a lifetime UCLA Bruins fan and would love to say the same thing....But I have listened to Pete for many years on his weekly radio spots and that's not what I hear from him. Yes he probably was very upset, but he was probably drained as I heard him and Sanchez talked all night long. Matter of fact, throughout the year and even early season, Pete made it clear that Sanchez still was coming along well and had lots to improve on. Either way, I would think Sanchez will be just fine.

I agree that Sanchez's stock is probably the highest it will be right now and in the NFL you need to get the biggest signing bonus possible as you never know what could happen with an injury and that we all know how football players always get screwed on their so-called guaranteed contracts when they get injured or have their contracts restructured. I agree with your thoughts, I just don't think it's right to say Pete Carroll doesn't want the best for his guys.

Considering Bradford and McCoy decided to stay in school, Sanchez is on a short list of capable QB's in the draft this year. So yes, his stock is probably much higher this year than next when those two declare and others come out of the woodwork during next season.

    another reason to dislike carroll.

weather he agreed or not that is not the place to speak his mind, it was sanchez's day, you only get to declare for the nfl draft once. it always has to be about pete, indirectly of course. he knows better what the nfl is looking for since he did so well there. the kid is 22 and had to sit this long to get his shot at USC and now gets this as his parting gift?

his stock is high with the other 2 qbs staying in school so why not go? cassell a career back up in that system will get paid this year why not him. see what happens and get paid. next year he is at least 3 maybe lower on the qb list, if he stays healthy.

matt leinart staying that extra year only helped pete, he still isn't ready to play and missed a year payday.

maybe his qb backups aren't as good as pete says they are.

That really surprised me. I believe that is the first time Pete has ever spoke out like that....

I like Carol. I believe he is one of the best coach right now in college football. I do believe it was a dumb move on Sanchez part though.

i agree he is one of the best, i don't like him but i respect what he has done, at USC. but this was sanchez's decision and he needs to do what he thinks is right not what his coach thinks is right. he may not be a pro qb, but he will get paid like one and next year he will be behind at least 2 maybe more qbs, strike while the iron is hot!!

The player made the smart move - a bird in hand is worth two in the bush - take the sure money...especially when it's gonna be a lot of money.
  • Three top rated quarterbacks are going to be in the 2010 draft, he has less competition in 2009 which should greatly improve his
    draft position.

I really think Pete Carroll is the best coach in the College Football arena. I think he was right in terms of his objective efforts to talk with Sanchez. Sanchez looked terrific New Years Day... the rest of his career has not been as great and another year would help. Carroll will find another QB... Carroll is just trying to do what is right here.

I guess I would've preferred a less awkward press conference from Carroll, but I love the guy and think he's probably right about Sanchez. His Rose Bowl performance was great, but he does not strike me as a future NFL star or even fairly competent starter. But given the lack of big QB names in this year's draft, I can't argue with Sanchez's thinking.

  • What Carroll did was very unsportsman like and unclassy. It is OK to disagree with someone over a decision made in a private
conversation but to go public with what was said and trash the person -- not cool. especially since that was supposed to be Sanchez's forum to announce his future plans.
