    Damn this recession!

It would have sold for at least $80,000 or more in a strong economy image

Glad to see Mantle cards are on the decline <sarcasm>

    Long live the King!

The buyer also receives a 1933 Goudey PSA 4.5 Babe Ruth for free! I like how the seller states no shipping to Nigeria.

I was 50/50 certain that the listing was bogus.

    Guess I was mistaken.

Those photos have been in some other listings,
and the general location got me thinking it was
part of the Craig's List gang.

Buyer has 17 feedback - might be a scambuster.

Buyer seems to leave negs for the big sellers - whatever that means? LOL

This is by no means conclusive, but I think below may demonstrate that the auction for the Mantle is not 100% legitimate. The first picture is from the auction in question. If you take a look at the yellow bat that Mantle is holding right above his hands (and directly above the Yankee logo), you can see that there are no little black marks. Now take a look at every other Mantle pictured below. Of course, the second pictured is Marshall Fogel's PSA 10. Every other Mantle pictured has those little black marks on the bat and across a variety of grades. Also, note the Mantle with the serial number 11134004. Apparently, someone sent it in for a possible 0.5 bump, but was unsuccessful (new flip.)

If I was the winner of that auction, I'd be on a plane tomorrow and picking that card up myself before I handed over a cent.

I completely agree with you. If you have $60,000+ to spend on a baseball card, you easily have enough money to catch a flight to inspect in person.
  • I've looked at a lot of legitimate cards and listings over many years. The first alarm of suspicion is when a card of this stature is presented with low quality scans and tags covering important, verifiable info. If this IS a real PSA 8, I would be SHOCKED --- but IMHO I think someone is going to be disappointed!

According to someone that 'bought' from this guy he is a scammer and that person lost 12k.

If you notice in the sellers 'me page' he has taken out the last name, it no longer says Rudy Tang just Rudy.

MSOHN who I highly respect said this seller was no good.

I also asked him if he could send me a scan with him holding the card.

He replied back saying yes he could but he would first have to get it out of the bank.

I never did get that scan.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Jack,
The molkanova123 card you posted is a fraudulent listing also. The cert # is correct but the backs of the flips are different. If you look at the current eBay auction, you can tell the difference between the real card and the fake he has listed. If you want to post the scans of the backs on this thread (I'm too lazy), I will explain if you can't see it.

Never trust anyone whose last name is a drink

    Rudy "Tang"

    Might as well be:

    Don Coke
    William Pepsi
    Richard Gatorade
    Sonny D. Lyght

The most interesting part of the saga is the raising of
    the question:

How was EBAY able to confidently state:

"EBAY T&S believes the listing to be legitimate."

    ???????????????

    I dunno.

The pull of about $5K in fees is powerful.

    .........

The other remote possibility is that EBAY prematurely tried
to hit the seller's credit card for the fees and the charge
    was declined.

That could explain the seller's NARU.

The buyer's NARU could be the result of a scambuster being busted.

    I dunno.

    .....

Next time those scans show-up, hopefully EBAY will listen to folks
who know what they are talking about.

    ..............

Another possibiltiy is that EBAY actually was working with LE to
nail the guy. Thus, they refused to poof the listing.

    I dunno.

storm - the same way that eBay told the owner of a '61 Aaron PSA 9 it was a legitimate auction and he should feel safe bidding when he saw on eBay the Mastro scan of the card he bought from Mastro, and notified them that it was a stolen scan and that he owned the card in question.

It was discussed on this board at the time. He did the logical thing - he bid on the card.

Ebay should force sellers of hi end items to be bonded.

anything above a certain amount should be reserved for honest people
to sell. I'm getting sick and tired of seeing all this scamming, it reminds me
    of Yahoo auctions.

Also, what nitwit would even buy a 52 Mantle on ebay?

Just about every 52 Mantle auction is a scam.

Unless a well established seller is selling it it is most likely a scam.

No one that owns such a card will try to sell it on ebay.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • If you want a 52 mantle, goto a card show where PSA is, take the card with the seller to PSA and have it reviewed on the spot. Once, it is deemed ok, complete the transaction
This is the ONLY way I would buy this type of card.
If you are willing to spend this much money, how can you not spend 250.00 on a southwest plane ticket and 25.00 for a review (if it even costs that much).

The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407
