PSA/DNA said it's not real

I have a card that was not holdered by PSA/DNA because they found it to "questionable" while I know for a fact that it is authentic since I obtained it in person myself. What are my options to resolve this if there is any? (or should I just go to JSA instead)

No it's for my personal collection. It's not even a high-dollar item but just happens to be one of my favorite players - Alonzo Mourning.

Just asking. Did you get a picture taken with him or anything? Maybe that would help. I can't say one way or another as I've never sent anything to psa/dna.

I have a picture of him with my phone while I was waiting in line during his book tour signing. But I don't have picture of him signing my card.

  • Can I ask the reasoning for getting it slabbed? I ask that in that I have a few cards that I considered slabbing but couldn't decide if I want to do it or not. With that being said, I'd be interested in hearing reasons for getting cards slabbed in a situation like this.

I have all my auto cards slabbed. I just like them better and well-protected.

    Hi Austin,

Chris (ripkenintheminors) summed it up pretty well by saying "Just a reminder that no system is 100% accurate."

I'm not sure what recourse you have, if any, but JSA might be the road to take ... after all, it's all based on educated opinions.

Not sure why your Mourning sig failed the test, but I've heard that some sigs are studied more than others, making lesser studied ones more prone to error.

I've had in-person Mickey Mantle sigs fail the 3rd Party test too. It's very frustrating in the least.

While I do have pics of my father and me with Mantle, and my sons and me with Mantle, I have no pics of Mantle signing these items; back then forgery wasn't running wild like today.

My reasoning, for wanting our signed collectibles authenticated by a 3rd party, was simply to obtain the best possible price(s) should I or my sons ever decide to part with any of the items.

Good luck with whatever you decide image

I get my autographed cards slabbed for a variety of different reasons:

    1) Uniform appearance for display purposes
    2) Uniform size for storage in Matt's storage cases
    3) Industry accepted authentication (typically when anyone sees an autograph, one of their first gut questions is "Is it real?", the industry has chosen to accept PSA/DNA as one of the leaders in that field and their opinion has a premium placed on it compared to others so for a lot of folks, it addresses the "Is it real?" aspect (yes, I realize they make mistakes like everyone else walking the planet, including you and I, but they do have industry appeal)
    4) Typically enhances the trade/sale value of the item, over a like, non-authenticated example, more than the grading fee costs, so it's value added. (even if you never plan on selling them, your estate may have a different opinion when that day comes for all of us)
    5) Typically protects the cards during handling by others better than CardSavers. If you like to share your collection with friends and allow them to hold and view them, I personally believe there is less chance for a clumsy friend to damage your cards when they hold a PSA/DNA holder as opposed to that same card in a Card Saver.
    6) Provides quick identification of what the item is in a relatively short to the point format. Useful when someone else is viewing/handling your cards. IE, anyone not familiar with the various issues, can learn quickly from the label that it's a 1948 Yogi Berra Bowman card and that the sig is authentic.

Hope this gives a reasonable explanation of why I have cards slabbed.

Welcome to the club...I have a Thurman Munson signed card (2 actually) that I got in person and both got thumbs-down from both PSA and JSA. They didn't mind taking my money though.

Try emailing Joe Orlando and requesting a review, maybe send scans of the pictures of you at the signing. They don't use that kind of stuff in the authentication process but it couldn't hurt your case.

Very well put. I loved the recent auto special for that reason. Gave me a chance to get a bunch of them protected, in a standard size case. Though I don't plan to sell many of them, it's nice to know that it will be much easier in holders, than not.

I understand what you mean about the auto's sometimes not passing PSA inspection.....I have 50 cards now at PSA for slabbing, the vast majority I got in person at shows I was set up at down in Canton, Ohio....it's going to be interesting to see how many of them pass the inspection and how many come back unslabbed. I'll let everyone know when they are returned, hopefully soon (logged in at psa on 12/16 and 12/30, two 25 card submissions).
  • I've had in-person autographs failed also. Also, I've seen autographs that are high dollar and have very few examples in existence fail as "questionable", "not likely authentic" or "unable to determine authenticity"

Well, my first submission of 25 cards popped. Only one questionable authenticity. I had them graded also, don't know if that was a mistake or not but most came back 8's or 9's as far as the card goes with auto's verified as authentic. I'll show some scans when I get them back. My 2nd batch of 25 is mostly football.

Nice sub ... not sure if I would have had the cards graded though, unless I thought they had a chance for a 10 <jmho>

Which ones of this particular batch were "in-person" autos?

Looks like only the Swell, Score and most probably the '81 Ham & the '90 Montana.

You are right about the one's that were in person auto's. The Montana I bought from a friend I work with who told me his brother had gone to a show and had it signed. So that one I can't argue with the result, I could have been taken since I wasn't the one who got the auto. The others I personally handed the card to the player and had them sign. The football I have in my next submission were all from shows I did in Canton and had the players autograph the card for the most part. Hopefully they will pop soon. Guess I shouldn't have had the cards graded but this is the first time I've sent in like this, I took advantage of the $10 special.

Is the better route to just have them authenticated with no grade??? any opinions from others more familiar with this???? thanks al.
