If you could attend any sporting event of the last century, what would it be?

Saw this on another site & thought it'd make good conversation here. It's a tough call. Any game or event from 1909 to date? Hmmmm...

I'd have to go with July 4th, 1939 Yankee Stadium. Not only do i get to see a double header with some great Yankee Hall Of Famers like DiMaggio, Dickey & Lazzeri - but in between games is the most iconic sports related speech of all time, " Today,I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." Man, imagine the electricity in the air, the emotions - I get goosebumps just thinking about it!

2nd place Oct 1, 1932 Wrigley Field to see Ruth's called shot. I'd bring one of today's high tech cameras & record it just to prove it happened!

How about you?

Great topic, only several thousand great events to choose from,

Cant quite pick one, or place a true order of desire to see in person, so in date order, here's three I would truly enjoy,

1927, Dempsey-Tunney heavyweight title rematch, the famous "Long Count",
1951, Giants-Dodgers, Bobby Thompson hits "The shot heard round the world",
1960, Teddy Ballgame hits a HR in his very last at bat, true to his principles, wont tip his cap to the screaming crowd.

From the perspective AT THE TIME, it would be the night McGwire hit homerun number 62.

From the perspective of right now, probably Game 3 of the 1932 World Series to see to what extent, if any, Babe Ruth in fact called his shot.

I was at the 91 WS in Atlanta. As a lifelong Braves fan, it will never be better than that. Of course, winning would have been nice. I attended at least one game in each WS during the run (and lots of other playoff games), but you never forget your first (WS game that is).
  • Hank Aarons RB HR.
    Maris hitting 61'
    Gherig's speech
    Cal's breaking Gherigs streak
    Fisk hitting the W.S. HR
  • I was a hockey freak at one time so I'd say Miracle on Ice. I remember they showed it on tape delay, and I begged everyone not to tell me the result.

I'd have to say the game that Cal Ripken broke the games played streak. That was not only a great moment in sports, but a great moment in American history.

Watching Jesse Owens win his fourth gold in Berlin. Bonus points if I get to sit next to the Fuhrer.

Mines is stupid but real. I'd like to see the first major league game I ever saw on April 27th 1968. I was a 9 year cub scout. Tom Phoebus just happened to toss a no-hitter. I was so caught up in the merriment , that I never realized what was really going on.

My 2nd game(s) is another dumb one , but had a true place in my heart . On the night of August 1st , 1972 the Baltimore area was in the grips of a nasty hurricane--Agnes. As a 13 year old who had not been through too many of these types of storms, this was a nasty one. My brothers and I's bedroom was in the attic and most radio transmissions were not to be found or heard . But somehow , I picked up the double header out of Atlanta , where was my childhood hero Nate Colbert of the San Diego Padres was hitting 5 HR's in that DH. On a terrible night , I got to listen to my mighty hero make dogmeat out of the Braves staff.

I also would have like to see Vander meer's double No-hitters. I would have loved to see Herb Score pitch or Walter Johnson or even to see if Stu Flythe was really that terrible.

In the end, I'd love to see the 2 sets of games I mentioned in the beggining.

I'm a Sox fan, but I would sure like to be there for that Gehrig speech.
  • Miracle on Ice would be cool too.

Borg-McEnroe at Wimbledon would be awesome.

87 Canada Cup between the Russians- Team Canada.

1995 Orange Bowl between Nebraska and Miami, Fla.

The Black Sox world series. So I could see for myself if Shoeless Joe was really in on it. To this day
I still believe based on his stats that there was no way he was in the wrong.

Any Ajax Amsterdam games in the early 70's. Easily the most talented soccer club ever IMO.

This is a very fun question to think about. The event that has really captured my imagination as of late, would be the game Babe Ruth hit homers 712, 713, and 714 back in 1935 while playing for the Boston Braves. Ruth was well past his prime but had 1 legendary moment still left in him. It's been recorded that one of the balls completely cleared the right field roof. Measurements of 600 feet have been talked about. No one at that time had ever done that. I would think there are a few people who remember this and were there. That would be my choice.image

The first thing that came to mind was the 1936 Olympics with Jesse Owens.

I would also have loved to watched Lou Alcindor in college.

How about October, 1924 when Red Grange scored five touchdowns against Michigan.

How about 1985 NLCS Game 6....Ozzie Smith hits his first career left-handed homerun over the right field fence to win the game....."Go crazy folks, go crazy."

  • Gotta be the Miracle on Ice. Not only did this game rock the sporting world but the positve emotional impact that it had on the Nation as a whole is something that will be difficult to top. This event transcended sports.

  • Cardinals....Super Bowl.....two weeks.

    Jasen
  • The first Ali-Frazier fight at Madison Square Garden in March of 1971. The anticipation level was huge and built for weeks in those
days long before a 24 hour sports channel like ESPN even existed people were aware of this fight. The fight was perfect for its time
with a controversial figure like Ali and what he represented to a lot of people both pro and con.

I remember a radio call in show the night before the fight where people were arguing back and forth over who they thought would win.

The fight itself was truely a great one and lived up to the hype.
