Grades popped and I think I have lost my grading eye

The cards were logged in on January 8th and grades just popped. The January Special. I figured there were about 15 that were sure PSA 8's with 7-8 of them having a good shot at a 9. Sure missed out on that call. The two Mantles were what I expected. I obviously missed a crease on the 1956 Swanson and 1959 Williams. I don't get too many "E of T" so that was a surprise. And the 1964 Kaline was a card that I thought might get a 9 but it apparently is undersized. Normally I predict about 85-90% correct as to what the grades will be but not this time. Anyway, thanks to PSA for the 6-day turn around on the cards.

dont really see where your eye lies. now that they are giving out 8.5's maybe before those slipped in as 9's. overall i would say a good sub not knowing the pop reports or seeing the cards. but for 50's-60's those are stellar grades in my book.

I doubt you lost your grading eye, the graders are extremely harsh the last 6 months or so.

    PsaRich,

As Jradke said , I think you got some excellent grades for 50's and 60's cards !
I was wondering about the January Special if you could submit star cards as long as they were valued under $100.00 , is that correct ???? As long as you submit lower grade cards of star cards that will not grade above a Psa 7 or 8 and stay under the $100.00 value , your submission will stay under the rader for getting the cards graded and into a holder ??? Thanks in advance for any info someone can give me !

    Hey Robbie:
I have always submitted star cards in the specials as long as I felt they would be valued within the limit that PSA sets, in this case $100. I had called PSA several years ago about this issue and also what I should use for setting the insurance value. At the time I was told that if it was a really nice vintage card to list its insurance value at a minimum as that of a PSA 8. So I have kind of used the PSA 8 value as a barometer for establishing values on really nice (in my opinion 8's-9's) cards that I send in for grading.

I figured the 1966 Mantle would be about a 5 which is listed at $100. The 1965 Mantle WS got the 7 I thought it would get and its SMR value is $80. I figured the 1959 Mazerowski and Kaline Batting Champ would be get 8's which would give them SMR values of $55 and $60 repectively. The only star card that might have been graded at a level that would make it valued at more than $100 was the 1964 Kaline. I figured it was a sure 8 valued at $75 with an outside chance at a 9, valued at $450. As it ended up it didn't get graded due to size issues. I try not to push the limits on PSA's $ value specifications. I have in recent years received some 9's on vintage baseball that were valued at more than $100 value limit and PSA didn't push the issue. If a card is a beauty, I figure it most likely will get an 8 and I figure that SMR value when I submit. When you start dealing with star cards from the early 1960's and before, even the PSA 8 grades are normally worth more than $100 so in those cases I submit them if I think they will probably get a 7. Cards that I think will be of great value if graded, I save up and send in when I renew my PSA membership so I don't need to deal as much with value limitations. I believe the value limit is $500 with your membership. I have couple 1955 Koufax RC's that might get a 4 or 5 and I will send those in with my next renewal. Hope that helps.

I got blasted on the Dec Auto cards.

I managed nothing higher than 8 - with a 6.5 on a 1993 Donruss Elite Will Clark - to add insult to injury I have to go through the hassle of having it sent back an re-slabbed because it was labled as a "1992".

    Ughhh

Hoping for better results on the Jan subs.

They are being really tough right now.
  • Just a passing thought, can you send me a scan of the Koufax's if you have interest in selling them as ungraded? I have an interest in low end "iconic" cards, and this one is on my list. The NM+ examples are, to be frank, out of my budget.

    Thanks,
