Can't tell. Try a scanner, the higher the resolution the better.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

If authentic, untrimmed, and not recolored, PSA 7 (possibly PSA 8) with an OC or MC qualifier.

Odds are (assuming it is authentic) that you'll pull a MC qualifier based upon the fact that the reverse appears to be miscut (note the top) as the ball appears to be cut.

OC i could see...but why do you think that it could be a MC...I don't think it's nearly that bad
  • MC or trimmed if authentic.
  • OK i am not at all worried about this card being authentic. I'm very sure it is. All i'm asking is for a number grade and if you think it has an OC or even an MC Q
  • Not trying to pile on or anything, but the last thread about this same card was without a doubt a reprint. If you are absolutely positive that this one is authentic, at best it is a 4 without qualifiers or possibly a 5 or 6 with an MC qualifier.

Edit to add, this is assuming that it is not trimmed which is a distinct possibility after looking at the back.

for just a grade w/o including any possible Qs, I'd say .... PSA 7
  • Keep the grades coming
  • my guess is trimmed and fake.

    Trimmed
  • I can't tell much from the pics, but my experience is if the ball is cut on the back, you will get a MC.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.

Where did you buy it or where did you get it? Knowing that would solve 99% of the puzzle.
  • yeah i think that mine is in much better condition image but the centering is only a little better than that one image

1953 Mantles are sold raw for a reason.

Stop trying to rip one and buy one already authenticated and graded.

    Good for you.

And especially from a "newbie" - a newbie buying a raw card such as this, especially off ebay, is asking for trouble, even if buying it from a seemingly "reputable" dealer with "decent" feedback.

Great advice - there's just so many things that can go wrong if you don't know the card and can't see it before you buy it. The last time you got lucky and got a refund.

This is mine, it's only a psa 2 so it's not what you're looking for, but it shows all the flaws a 55 year old card can have. Chances are that if somebody has one for sale and it's raw you might find -

    red area recolored
    rough edges made smoother
    soft corners made sharp again
new card made to look old

I hope you got a steal but Steve's advice is right on target. A low resolution (or even a doctored) picture can make a card look a lot better than it is. Don't get cheated.

All you can do is submit it. Either PSA or SGC would be the best. See what happens. I would send to SGC and check Authentic just in case. What would it hurt......? Nothing but a few bucks........

Unfortunatly, the graders don't take a poll of Message Board Members when making the final determination of a card's grade.
