I need help from you Epson scanner users

I just picked up an Epson NX400 for scanning cards and printing things that need printed. I've heard great things from everyone about Epson scanners.

Here are comparetive scans of my '54 Bowman Campy. The first is from my old HP scanner, the second is from the Epson. What can I do to sharpen up the Epson scans?

This is a scan of the 2004 Bowman Chrome Yadier Molina PSA 10 that Josh (illini) got for my Secret Santa gift (Thanks again, Josh!). As you can see, it looks like crap. How do you guys scan extremely glossy cards like this?

I do like how it scans raw cards, however. The first is a scan of my T220 Beecher scanned with my old HP, the second scanned from the Epson (sorry for the different resolutions).

Please help out a newb. image Thanks in advance!

Chris

Thanks

  • Does the new one have a CCD scanning element?? If not, all your scans of slabbed cards will be blurry.

Even out of box scans with zero adjustments should look better that those.

    Steve may be right.

Just checked the specs on-line and it does not have a CCD scanning element, so that's about as good as it's going to get.

Did a quick search online and it says Scan Element: CIS.

You should look into getting an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo

Alas, it would appear your model does not have CCD as noted by the lack of mention of that technology here.

Conversely, it is mentioned on other products such as this one.

Many multi-function units do not include this capability as they cater to the typical paper or photo scanners rather than dimensional items such as a slab where the flip is a bit removed from the bed and comes out fuzzy as a result.

That's the info I found as well. Take it back and get one with a CCD scanning element. You will get quality like this if you do:

    Hey Chris,

I just purchased this Epson Perfection V300. So far I am happy with the job it does. I have just used the factory settings. Here is an example of a graded pack:

I don't have an answer for you but that sure is one nice looking PSA 4 Campy.

    Steve
    Good for you.

Matt, does the optional 30 page document feeder help you save time when scanning your Emmitt slabs?

Thanks, guys. That is one of my favorite cards. It's got a couple hard to see surface wrinkles that keep it out of a higher slab. But it is plenty good enough for me. image

What scanner do you have, brianwintersfan?
