Who cares how many you have...if you feel like it go ahead and register your set. I just registered my Mercury set with a whopping ONE coin in it; and I'm not even sure when I'll get around to buying another. The one I have in there was really purchased for my CNS type set.

I think you should have 41 before registering.

  • Hey Kory,
Start it with 6 and watch it grow.

  • IMO, at least 50% of the set needs to be complete. As many of us have said before, notice the title "Registry Set" not "Registry Coin." The reigistry is a place for people to show off their accomplishments, and compete with other collectors. I know many people who have put 20+ years into their sets, taking time and effort to find the perfect coins. Any idiot can walk into a shop, buy a mercury dime for $40 and throw it in the registry.

  • I think all you need is one coin, but have a commitment to add more in the very forseeable future. Given the weighting being applied to sets, even if you have a pop one coin, you aren't going to be very high on the list until you set shows some substance. But if you can collect, you can decide for yourself how many coins you want to put up, there is no NEED to put up any.

    Kory,
do what makes you happy !
Start with 6 and watch it hit 97 ..only took me 37 years to have all 97 at one time.

  • Kory,

Hope all is well with you.

About 30 years ago, I was started with 1, I added another 10 or so in the next 5 years. Enter about 15 year hieates, hiatus, hyates ... absence (where is MacCoin when you need him). Went to Mint set, went to year set, went to 90+ not to mention the 100 or so doubles/extras (minus the 89cc, 93s, 95p, 95s). Started going to many coin shows and saw multiple dealers with multiple displays where you could buy high end certified Morgans by the baker's dozen as well as nice raw coins by the gross and thought to myself ... I'll go back to my year set.

Since then, I have sold off (and been selling off Morgans for about 2 years now ...). I am keying in on specific years/MMs and have been seriously hooked on the Ike Business strike series for about 5 years now.

Good luck with your Morgan set !!!!!

P.S. If you average out the numbers given to you in this thread, it looks like 16 should work for you (1, 6, 41).
    My eBay Items

I love Ike dollars and all other dollar series !!!

I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!

If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??

Appreciate the thoughts guys, and am taking them all into account. Like some, I have been in and out of these Morgans for a few years, then lost interest when I started my modern certified kick a while back and pulled most of the nicest Morgans out of my Dansco's to get certified. Well, when I sold off most of my stuff, I ended up with again just the Morgan and Peace sets in the albums, (not completed by any means, but lacking mostly keys and semi keys, all in BU) Well here I am now, back fired up about these silver dollars and have been adding quite a few to the Dansco's until I realized, I am paying $100+ for some of these dollars in whatever slabs they happen to be in just to make sure I get nice MS coins and cracking them out and putting them in an album. Some I just can't crack out, so I ended up with a few certified ones besides the albums, so as I had the extra $ I have added a few more and now, I have decided that I want to do a certified set, but am still working on a raw BU set also. I know trying to get them raw and certified will only slow down the final outcome, but nice BU coins are HARD to find, and I am about down to the semi-keys and keys, whereas, on the certified set, I can continue to add the common dates in 65 or maybe a few 66's until I run across the nice raw BU (or certified) that I can put in the Dansco. I am down to 5 Peace dollars from having the entire set in BU, and plan on trying to get those before I really concentrate solely on the Morgans.
I agree, and have the attitude that I can do whatever I like, but I can also see the current set owners not liking someone with only a few coins adding them and bumping folks around (if it really matters) so I think I will just standby here for a while, pick up a few more where I can, and when I get the Peace set done, then registering the Morgans and concentrating on completion of them then.
Thanks for everyones input, and for listening to the story
