Nice medals; I especially like the first one, do you have any more information about it?

    A 27 mm silver medal.
The label said it commemorated the 200th anniversary of Dutch independence. However, when I checked the history, 1772 was not that anniversary. So, I had to figure out what happened in 1572 that the Dutch would commemorate it with a personification broken free from its shackles.
I finally pinned it down to the revolt of the Sea Beggers. This was a collection of Calvinist mariners who regularly harassed the Catholic authorities in different ways. At some point, some authority called them a bunch of beggars and these Calvinists proudly adopted the name.
Anyway, in 1572, they captured a small port when no Spanish garrison was on duty. This incident triggered a wave of revolution that eventually kicked out the Spanish.
If you are familiar with hagiography, it was this point in time that created the 15 Martyrs. These were some of the Catholic clergy that the Calvinists rounded up, tortured and hanged.

I like the info as well but the third medal is more my style. Wowsers! An eye opening hunk of metal. Thanks for sharing that one with us... I love the little lacy looking garter belt thing around the thigh. What an angel! That medal is enough to make a good dog go bad just on eye appeal alone. Nice one! Got a spare one to trade?

Sorry, few of my medals are duplicates. I suppose the garter is there for that "Come hither" look!

There was a LOT of stuff like that going on then. Not long after (ok 40+ yrs after, but who's counting), there was this little thing called the Thirty Years War, between the Catholics and Protestants (mainly Lutherans, but Calvinists and others played, too)

I've been working on my family history and have quite a few ancestors who lived in the Hesse-Kassel region of Germany during this time. That, along with frequent outbreaks of plague, made for some rough times. I tire of the whining I hear about how "bad" things are now.
